About the Book

Across the Darkling Sea is the first book in the new serial fantasy series Magicfall, by K. Ferrin!

Magic is forbidden in Brielle, but that never stopped Evelyn. Until Now. Because Evelyn has discovered she is magic, and now she is running for her life.

Her only hope is on an island cloaked in shadow, an island of dark magic and even darker beasts. An island warlocks call home.

Evelyn’s friends have turned against her, her own mother tried to kill her, and the place she calls home has banished her. Hidden away in the belly of a riverboat, a stowaway, her journey begins.

Across the Darkling Sea is book one in a serial series. Each book is roughly 50,000 words or about 150 pages. To emphasize, this is a serial series, meaning it’s one story that stretches across multiple books.

The black smear encased the house in a thick sheath that gleamed with a malevolent wetness. It towered above the house in a wildly twisting column, snapping like a loose sail caught in a heavy wind. She had no idea what it was, but it certainly wasn’t smoke.

The gleaming dark mass writhed and twisted like an animal caught in a trap. Fearsome and disturbing shapes formed in the shifting darkness, swelling and bulging as if they sought escape, only to disintegrate an instant later, sucked back into the deepest, darkest pinprick of night. A vibration filled the air, as if some beast screamed in agony, the sound of its voice too high or low for her to make out, but the force of its cry violently shaking the very air they traveled through.

That house was wrong somehow. Ling felt it in her very skin. It felt like worms burrowing just beneath the surface of her flesh, leaving itching tunnels in their wake. It shouldn’t exist, that house. Strangely, the twisting darkness that encased it seemed to belong. It was almost like a scar covering a wound sliced deeply into the flesh of the world itself. An attempt to heal a profound wrongness.

Strangest of all, the house stood out clearly against the trees behind it one moment, then faded out the next, becoming nothing more than a shadow on a cloudy day.

“You feel it too.”

It was not a question, and when Ling turned, she saw the captain standing just a few steps away, staring up at the dark mass.

“What is it?” she asked him. His eyes were open wide, with none of the usual sarcasm or harshness in them.

“It’s doom,” he said. “It’s death. All because of a man named Fariss.”

“What…” Ling’s throat was too dry for speech, but he seemed to understand the question anyway.

“It’s the foulest bit of magic ever done. Fariss and his ilk. Never was enough magic to satisfy them, so they opened a portal hoping to siphon it from some other place. Only it didn’t work, did it? Instead of pulling power in, it leaked it all out. It started this war, and it’ll be the death of all of us.”

About the Book

“We’re a youth culture of hedonists, Scarlet. And we’ll drink, snort, love and laugh ourselves into nothingness.”

Scarlet has never been one for moderation or doing anything by halves in fact. 2014 is coming to an end, and a generation of disillusioned youth is awakening. Set in the heart of Belfast, Scarlet, Deano and Lauryn find themselves in a restless limbo fueled by increasing amounts of cocaine. The opportunity for hedonistic extravagance is everywhere in ever-evolving forms, and they are taking full advantage.

Then Scarlet finds her ultimate hit…Jamie Brennan. Their intoxicating affair takes them on a metaphysical journey of love, laughter and psychedelic discovery. But all good things must come to an end, and their beautifully-crafted reality is threatened by the past, the truth and their own self-destruction. Will they realise who they are before it’s too late?

‘Tripping’ delves deep into a world defined by excess, pleasure and soul exploration. When more is never enough, how much are we willing to sacrifice?

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I am 26 and currently live in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After experiencing almost ten years of mental illness and addiction, I have been recovering for almost 2. I am the contributor’s editor and part owner of BAM Mag, an online publication based in Northern Ireland. I also write a Game of Thrones column called Throne Watch ( I am an aspiring Buddhist and practice meditation regularly.

What inspired you to write?

I have always loved writing from a young age. In school, English was my favourite subject and I have always been passionate about the written word in all its forms. It’s a very natural form of expression for me.

What inspired your novel?

I was in a psychiatric hospital recovering from a severe episode of depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I began writing the story out of the blue and never expected anyone else to actually read it!

What is the genre?

It is a cult fiction, coming of age drama.

What draws you to this genre?

It was very easy to write in this genre because I was growing up myself and was drawing and elaborating on personal experiences. With growing up novels it is a process of purging and processing your own issues, which is why it can be so therapeutic.

I also wanted to explore the depths of drug addiction, the mind of hedonism and the self-destructive culture that so many young people are stuck in.

How did you develop your plot and your characters?

I wanted the main character, Scarlet, to be female since you don’t read about women going through addiction as much as you do men. The young characters were easy to play with and develop as I had been in their position myself. Being my first novel, it was fun to add to their characters and change around their qualities. I am intrigued by psychology and people-watching, so creating characters is an extension of that.

What inspired your protagonist?

Mainly my younger self and all the deluded mindsets I am constantly trying to work through. I have met so many similar young women on a search for their ‘truth’, and there is a little part of her in many of us.

What inspired your antagonist?

Again a combination of people I met, experiences, and the inner demons many people face when it comes to addiction, disillusion and self-destruction.

What was the hardest part to write in the book?

Probably the climactic points of the characters’abuse of drugs, where I had to mentally return to that mindset and get it out on paper. It’s not easy to voluntarily go back to your darkest places and accept them as they were, but it is essential for growth.

What was your favourite part of your book to write?

I loved revisiting parts of the story, even if they were wrapped up in addiction, pain and delusion because now I have distance. This meant I learned to look at them with perspective, so I appreciate being able to do that and learn from it.

Are you a full-time or a part-time writer? If part-time, what do you do besides write?

I write part-time for BAM Mag and Excalibur Press, although sometimes that turns into full time! Aside from that, I practice Buddhism and volunteer at Belfast’s Kadampa Meditation Centre.

What are you currently reading?

How To Solve Our Human Problems” by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Who would you say are your favourite authors?

David Nicholls, The Bronte Sisters and Irvine Welsh.

How about your favourite books? What would be your top 5?

  1. The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger

  2. The Tibetan Book of Living And Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche

  3. Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

  4. One Day by David Nicholls

  5. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte

What are your future projects, if any?

I am writing another fiction novel about two sisters as well as a non-fiction book on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I will be expanding my Throne Watch column onto YouTube this year and also hope to write more articles on modern Buddhism.

What is your preferred method for readers to get in touch with you and your books?

Either by email or via my Facebook page:

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Write as much as you can and forget about the ego voice telling you what you are writing is rubbish. Let the rubbish come out and trust your inner voice. Write as though no one will ever read it and explore yourself through your writing to reach the good stuff.

About the Book

A year after the world was thrown into magical chaos, Harrison Cody takes part in an expedition to learn the cause. What his team finds is an unfathomable enemy, who intends to finish what was started and wipe out every remaining survivor. Harrison is the key to stopping it, but doing so will come with an unbelievable sacrifice, one he might not be willing to make.

My Rating

4 half stars

My Interview

I received this eBook from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

After reading “Prelude to Mayhem”, I couldn’t wait to delve back into New Chicago, to see where Dorothy, Mitchell, Harrison and especially Glimmer are in their adventure of finding each other, and settling into their new roles.

However, this story had less of Dorothy’s point of view and it focused more on Harrison and Glimmer, and this new adventure that they take with the New Chicago team.

Harrison, while kind-hearted and well-meaning, he is a little bit clueless. Although he tends to be really aware of how people perceive him and Glimmer, which is adorable watching them defend their relationship.
I did notice that Harrison had some oblivious insensitivities going on. But many of the characters, especially Apryl, had no problem pointing out he was being a giant jerk to people.

I love Glimmer. Seriously. Because she is so full of snark, insane intelligence and she gives her whole heart to everything and everyone.

But ugh, this book gave me so many feels! Bring some tissues, you might need them.

About the Book

Luke believes he has his life figured out…and then he meets Theo.

It should have been simple—a summer spent with his girlfriend Zara at her family’s holiday cottage in Cornwall. Seventeen-year-old Luke Savage jumps at the chance, envisioning endless hours of sunbathing on the private beach and riding the waves on his beloved surfboard. He isn’t interested in love. Though his rugged good looks and lazy charm mean he can have his pick of girls, he has no intention of falling for anyone.

Nothing prepares Luke for his reaction to Theo, the sensitive Oxford undergraduate who is Zara’s cousin and closest friend. All at once, he is plunged along a path of desire and discovery that has him questioning everything he thought he knew about himself. No one, especially Zara, must find out; what he and Theo have is too new, too fragile. But as the deceit spirals beyond their control, people are bound to get hurt, Luke most of all.

Caught Inside was named a finalist in the 29th Annual Lambda Literary Awards for Best Gay Romance, the 5th Annual Bisexual Book Awards for Best Young Adult Novel, and the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards for Best LGBT Fiction.

Warmth caresses my cheek. I sit up, blinking against the brilliant sunshine, and stretch experimentally. My headache has receded to a faint pulsing, and my stomach remains steady.

Zara glances over at me. “Feeling better?”

“Much.” Beyond the window, hills rise and fall like a pod of humpback whales against the sky, cattle dozing in the fields at their feet. “Where are we?”

“Devon. You’ve been asleep for hours.”

“Yup. Didn’t even stir when I stopped for petrol, which reminds me. I bought you something.” Zara indicates a carrier bag at my feet.

I bend to scoop it up. Inside is a bottle of water and a sandwich in a cardboard carton. It’s more than I deserve. I unscrew the cap and gulp half the water in one go. It’s lukewarm and tastes of plastic, but it’s a balm to my parched throat. Thirst quenched, I attack the sandwich. Egg and bacon. My favourite.

“Zara,” I say around a mouthful, “you’re the best.”

“You’re welcome.” She rests a hand on my thigh and gives it a gentle squeeze. “Sorry I was such a bitch.”

“You weren’t.” The corner of my mouth quirks in response to her raised eyebrow. “Well, maybe a bit, but it was my fault. I shouldn’t have drunk so much.”

“So you were out on the piss last night. I knew it.” She slaps my leg, but her eyes are amused.

We fall quiet, the earlier tension evaporated. I finish my sandwich, content to sit back and gaze at the view. Gradually, as we cross the border into Cornwall, the roads become narrower, the signs of civilization fewer and farther between. Towns give way to fishing villages surrounded by woodland and rolling fields. And then I get my first glimpse of the sea. The swell is visible even from this distance, rippling in the afternoon sun. My heart leaps in recognition.

“How long’s Theo been down here?” I ask a while later.

“A couple of months, since he finished uni for the summer.”

I try to imagine burying myself in the countryside for weeks on end, with only the waves and the occasional cow for company. The concept is too alien. Even in the holidays, when Mum’s working and I have the flat to myself, there’s a constant banging and creaking from the residents above and below me, the roar of traffic from the street outside. How might it feel to be really, truly alone?

Zara slows the car to manoeuvre a tight bend. “I think he just wanted to get away for a while. He’s been like that since the breakup, shutting himself away, refusing to talk about it. Don’t bring it up in front of him, will you?”

“What do you think I’m going to say? ‘Nice to meet you, Theo. By the way, sorry about your boyfriend.’”

“I’m serious, Luke. It really messed him up. He hasn’t even talked to me about it. Not yet.”

“Zara, I get it. It’s fine.”

All the same, with the countryside closing around us, the doubts set in. Perhaps Zara’s made a mistake bringing me. If Theo’s as cut-up as she says, he might not be in the mood for company, especially that of some guy he’s never met.

A quarter of an hour later, Zara swings through a gate set in the hedge and onto a gravel driveway. “We’re here.”

I’m allowed only a fleeting glimpse of the cottage before she veers into the garage, its entrance standing open in readiness. She parks beside the only other car, a silver Golf, its scratched body a marked contrast to the Mini’s gleaming paintwork.

Zara kills the engine. Silence descends, a silence more profound than any I’ve ever known. It presses in on my eardrums, a physical force. But for the fact that I can hear myself breathing, I would’ve sworn I’ve gone deaf.

“Well, come on.” Zara reaches for the door handle, her eyes alight. “Come and meet Theo.”

very beginning of his horrible fate. Will he be able to return the
Eye of Gaea and free the love of his life from the laurel tree in the
Black Forest?
The Oracle
The Cedric Series Book 3
Released Sept 1st
With Angeline back in Cedric’s arms and the Eye of Gaea in Romasanta’s
grip, the next step in their journey begins. All eyes are set on Mt.
Parnassus where the Oracle is protected by Delphyne, the mother of
all dragons and beasts. Assembling a group of willing patrons,
Romasanta leads them to Delphi, Greece where they will cross into a
realm void of technology. Only brute strength and magic reign in a
place where packs of Mimick dogs, Wyverns and Jaculus still run wild.
Meanwhile, back home Lillith takes on a mysterious curse cast on Tony
who will have to make a life changing choice. The question weighing
on all their minds is if two werewolves, the Incubus King, and a
demonized sorceress will live to fight their way into Gaea’s Gate
to enter the Otherworld?

Closing her eyes, the conversation between Cedric and Tony was no longer

audible to her ears. She allowed herself to remember the horrific events,

something she still fought over whether it was a good or bad to urge herself to

recall any of it. Her mind stretched back to the beginning of her torment. It

wasn’t her time with Cedric that had rotted her soul, but one twist in fate she had

failed to see coming. The frightening turning point wasn’t the fight where Cedric

defeated Boto and became the new King Incubus, but the appearance of Merlin.

At first glance, he seemed like nothing more than a bald old man with a long

white beard. A few layers of long-sleeved tan robes and a rope belt with a satchel

added to his sage-like appearance. Powerful and wise, yet the sensation of good

judgment faded in an instant. He had placed the Amulet of Avalon, the Eye of

Gaea, into one of his sleeves after snatching it from Morrighan when he turned

to address them. Cedric was still in his incubine form. Horns black and curled

like a rams at the sides of his skull. Glaring at the wizard, he clenched his fangs

tight with contempt. Hands and feet were clawed and massive, while he was

three times larger in overall bulk and muscle in this form. A smooth thin tail

swished with anger and his massive bat-like wings adorned with two fingers at

the main fold were still held high in alarm.

All I could do was stand there covered in my own sweat and tears.

Everything crimson, blood painting my body from war waging all around me. I

remember how my nostrils stung with the iron smell from it all. Red rivulets

raced down Cedric’s side where Boto’s first strike had torn through his flesh. The

world slowed. I watched drops fall to the black marble floor with a tick-tock like

the ticking of a Doomsday clock, splattering at Cedric’s feet like rose petals

breaking apart, scattering from a hard fall. My chest ached and fear clawed at

me to think he could feel that emotion within me.

Cedric had slain Boto only minutes before, claiming the title of King Incubus

for himself. Angeline witnessed the harsh reality of a bond breaking, the outburst

of magic’s harsh whiplash rattling through Morrighan. The amount of pain

ripping through the souls of Boto and Morrighan was unmistakable and neverending.

Her breath caught in her throat as Cedric’s fear slammed into her and she

mirrored back her own. This could be them someday. She tried to voice her

concern, wanting to ask if this is what he would face due to her own mortality,

but his green glare silenced her. The wave of dread retreated back into him,

letting her know it was not her place to worry. She was a human bound to a

demon, married to Lord Cedric du Romulus the Demonic Knight. In this world,

she had no right to voice her thoughts. The world of humans was the extent of

her knowledge, while his world was a cruel place somewhere between demons

and gods.

But now, I have no knowledge of any world… no place to belong…

Morrighan had fallen victim to the recoil of her sins. Years of curses had

been waiting for an opening to exact their revenge for her abuse of necromancy

and other black arts against magical beings and creatures. Taking the stone away

was like stripping her of her shield and armor. She had been left naked and

exposed to Gaea’s Law and the lashing for hurting children of Gaea; those who

were made by her, descended from her or carried her magic within them.

Morrighan’s punishment unfolded at incredible speed and she took on a

gruesome and beastly appearance. Spending decades, possibly centuries making

chimeras had made her into one as well. She fell, passing out across Boto’s

lifeless body, exhausted from the sudden physical change. Cedric and Merlin had

stripped Morrighan of everything she’d held valuable in her life.

Merlin had materialized before them, his power resonating through the air.

He continued his casual conversation with Cedric while eyeing her at every

chance. Goosebumps prickled across her skin and she involuntarily held her

breath, hoping it would make her less visible.

You see, I have been digging through a century’s worth of time trying to

find this particular bloodline, but I see you have spoiled it with your own blood.”

The eyes of the wizard were growing brighter, bluer even as he scowled. His

tone of voice towards Cedric was as if he were a child who broke an expensive

vase. “This is going to delay my work. I will have to find a way to undo the

damage you have done to her witch’s blood. I despise demons and the work they

do on the human body. Worse off, you have gone as far as binding yourself to

her, it’s degrading.”

Cedric’s wings flared out in response of the wizard making it known

Angeline was his target. Her heart had been pounding, leaving her chest aching.

Anger waved out of Cedric, the heat of it physically flowing from him. She

could feel the scorching fire of his ire and his muscles tightened as if they were

her own.

Don’t touch her.” Fear shook her core at the sound of Cedric’s growl, a deep

demonic tone pouring from him.

Her thoughts tightened their hold on her. ‘Am I afraid of Cedric or the

You will not take her!” Cedric roared.

Ah, but I will, demons are such poor thinkers, tsk.” A smile crawled across

the old man’s face.

Angeline stood, watching it unfold. ‘No, not Cedric, but the wizard has every

part of me shaking with fear. Those glowing eyes… he will leave here with me…

I can feel it…’

She will be making her new home on Avalon, without you, of course.”

Scoffing, he continued to patronize Cedric. “It never shocks me to see how

easily demons fall for humans. The wolf never sleeps with the sheep for a

Cedric snarled, “What do you want from her?”

I can’t run, he’ll get me.’ Looking down she saw her enchanted bow and a

sparkle of hope fluttered in her heart. ‘But if I can land a hit with Wylleam’s bow,

I can’t help but wonder if its magic might allow us to run.’

Her magic is dormant, there is nothing you can get from her.” It was more

of a plea coming from Cedric.

Ah, but you see, I have been pulling such deep magic into my own blood to

gain immortality. With the ancient line she holds, I will be able to achieve this as

well as the power to clean the rest of the demon powerhouses off this earth. I

will become supreme ruler of mankind, not Beelzebub, or any creature of such

spoiled lineage.” As Merlin continued his rant with Cedric, she gripped the wood

of her bow tight, sweat rolling down her cheek. “Feh, but unfortunately, I got

here far too late and will now have to cleanse her of your filth and try not to kill

her in the process. Bindings and transformations are difficult filths you hellish

dogs have plagued mankind with.”

She froze. The wizard took a step towards Cedric, sending him into a charge.

Her stomach knotted as she watched the distance between them grow until she

was out of Cedric’s reach.

NO! He’ll get me! I know it! I can sense it! CEDRIC COME BACK!’ If only

he could hear her thoughts!

Extinct Book Tour & Giveaway

AM13 Outbreak Series Book 3
by Samie Sands
Genre: Horror
Writing books about the horrors of the zombie apocalypse is one thing—but Georgie Blake can’t believe it has become her reality…
She never expected her fictional stories of blood, death, and the consumption of human flesh to jump off the page into the real world. She certainly didn’t think she’d survive this long if they had.As a shy novelist, she was sure she’d be one of the first to die.
Safe in the Sanctuary, Georgie holds on to hope for a cure…
But that’s not all she holds on to. The government has promised the people of the Sanctuary that they can return home. The rumours are rife that there is an antidote on the horizon. But even if not, the infected are dying out, throwing the treacherous AM13 virus to the brink of extinction. If the infection dies out, this horrible nightmare Georgie is living in will be a distant memory.
Until everything that’s right goes terribly wrong…
Soon after meeting some new friends in the Sanctuary, Georgie learns she’s going to have to face the monsters outside the walls if she wants to return to her old life. But for a scared, introverted bookworm, it may be too much to consider…
Will Georgina conquer her fears of the dead to return home, or will she be one of the countless others who have gone Extinct?
AM13 Outbreak Series Book 2
Every attempt to contain the deadly AM13 virus has failed, leaving humanity on the brink of extinction…
The plague is spreading out of control with no cure in sight. Then the government announces its new plan—a sanctuary in an area completely untouched by the infected—as long as you can get there alive and unscathed.
Ethan Watton has managed to survive this long, even with OCD making every day more hellish than it already is…
Ethan’s obsessive-compulsive disorder dramatically affected his life before the infection began. Now he’s desperate to get as far away from the zombie virus as humanly possible. Isolated and afraid, Ethan thinks there is no way in hell he will survive the epidemic.
Alyssa Turner has spent her teenage years prepping for the undead to challenge her zombie killing skills…
Alyssa knows with absolute certainty that she will survive the AM13 virus. She’s read all the books, watched all the films, and done all the research. She’s strong, tough, and a self-proclaimed badass. Any group would be lucky to fight alongside her…until the unthinkable makes her doubt every skill she’s acquired.
Dr.Jones is a scientist who doesn’t understand why he was selected to produce a cure…
Surely there are survivors more experienced in virology than he is. And what will happen to him—and the rest of the species—if he fails? Is the fate of the human race really resting on his shoulders? Or are there others working toward the same goal?
With the zombies multiplying and survivors struggling to make it to the sanctuary, Ethan, Alyssa, and Dr. Jones fight to fulfill their destinies. If they fail, their fate is sealed, and they will join the millions of others who have been…
AM13 Series Book 1
Leah Watton’s practical joke has spiralled way out of control—all to impress a crush…
With a prank online video, Leah hopes to catch the attention of Jake Colton, a cute, blond-haired, blue-eyed co-worker she’s had a crush on for months. But instead of sending it to Jake, she manages to forward the clip to her boss—who buys every gory second.
When mass panic ensues, Leah learns the video is more than a staged act…
The government is calling the virus AM13. As the outbreak spreads, citizens are forced to stay indoors while they assess the gravity of the illness. Most people are quarantined in their homes, but Leah, Jake, and Leah’s best friend Michelle are some of the unlucky few who are stuck at work when the Lockdown occurs.
That’s where she first encounters one of the infected…
Aside from a contaminated woman devouring one of her co-workers, Leah has another problem. Does she do as she’s ordered and stay at work? Or should she disobey government orders and break free to reunite with her family?
She can’t go it alone—after all, Leah has none of the skills needed to survive—but with Michelle and Jake by her side, not even a contagious virus and a sea of the dead can keep her from…
Breaking out of the Lockdown…

Kara’s chest heaved and her breaths got shorter. The room she found herself in was pitch black and eerily quiet. She tentatively took a step forward, wincing at the echo of each movement. She blinked rapidly, trying to work out what she was supposed to do, but nothing immediately came to mind.

“Hello?” she whispered, unsure of how loud she should talk.

She was answered by a resounding silence. Certain she was alone, she continued moving with more confidence.

She ran her fingers along the ice-cold wall, trying to find an exit. The dark was disconcerting and, to be honest, creeping her out a bit. She much preferred being able to see what she was doing.

Suddenly, her fingers stumbled across a steely metal. Kara jumped back, panicking for some unknown reason. When nothing happened, she continued to move her hand along—what was becoming obvious—a chain. As much as she was confused by this, she was also curious, excited almost. Her lips started to tremble, but this time because she was sure she was about to be free of this constricting blackness.

A noise reverberated off the walls and Kara span around, hands in front of her face. This action was completely pointless of course, she still couldn’t see anything. As her heart rate slowed down, she started to think she had just invented the noise. That or someone was just trying to mess with her. Her palms were sweating as she fumbled frantically with the chain, shaking and pulling it, no longer caring how loud she was. She just needed this nightmare to be over.

She gave up tugging, tears threatening to spill out, and simply started screaming for help. Her panic levels had reached hysteria and she felt like nothing was going to shake her out of it. She shouted louder and with more determination. Why was everyone ignoring her, God damn it? She was absolutely sure someone could come and help her if they really wanted to.

A growl emanated, so low it could have been in Kara’s imagination. The overwhelming stench of rot that accompanied it stunned her into silence. She couldn’t even breathe. It suddenly became very obvious to her what was happening, and even though terror filled her entire being, she didn’t move, cry, or even really feel. She was just numb and frozen.

The chains started rattling and Kara let out a whimper. She suddenly realised what she had been messing with only moments before, how could she have been so stupid? She staggered backwards, the knowledge that she would only hit stone wall doing nothing to stop her. Her body was just reacting in a natural way, trying to escape danger, even if there was no real option left for her. Her legs felt heavy and her lungs tight. What now?

She slumped to the floor, her back to the wall, not even noticing the cold anymore. Her mind was racing, trying to come up with a solution. She had a little experience in this area of course, but to be honest, up until this point she had been really lucky. Why had she thought this was something she could do?

The circular design of the room meant she had no idea where any of the sounds were coming from; there was just no way of telling. Even though her body had well and truly given up this fight, resigned to its inevitable end, her mind was screaming at her, begging her to fight back. She started whispering to herself, the first sign of madness coming through thick and strong, telling herself there was no point, there was nothing she could do anyway.

Suddenly a drip of pus fell onto her bare shoulder. Kara screeched and cowered away, crawling at the speed of light across the floor, knocking into her attacker’s legs on the way. She knew she was quicker, of course, that was common knowledge, but she also knew there was only so long she could avoid it. She would get tired long before that bastard would. Many people had been taken out using that tactic.

The growling and movement became more frequent as if realising she was definitely there had set a firework up her assailant’s backside and now it was honing in on its opponent. She stood up, fists flailing in all directions. She knew hand-to-hand combat wasn’t exactly ideal, but she just needed to buy herself some time. There had to be something in this Godforsaken room she could fight with, that was the point, wasn’t it? She wished her eyes would adjust to the dark, but it was so black in here, she had no hope of that.

Her toe smacked violently into something wooden on the floor. Kara screamed out in pain and started hopping around. How was it possible to stub your toe in a circular room?

That was it!

She suddenly remembered them saying there was always something you could use to defend yourself, however difficult the situation. She bent down and wrapped her hands around the cylindrical piece of wood, a newfound hope filling her heart.

Okay, so it wasn’t exactly a gun or a machete, but at least she was no longer completely helpless. She swung the wood aimlessly, a smile playing on her lips. She was going to get out of this mess alive, whatever the cost.

Finally, she connected. The squelching sound and splat across her face, of what she could only assume was blood, confirmed this much. The thing grunted as she swung repeatedly, determined to finish this off quickly.

Suddenly, a glaring white light filled the room and she was momentarily blinded. Kara span around, confident of her achievement. She waved the stick above her head, imagining cheers from an invented audience. She stepped towards the light, wondering what her future held…
