Rumination Sunday/Update

Rumination Sunday

This is kind of a rumination slash update. This week, I had to put a notice of not accepting any more review requests.

I wanted to explain a little of what is going on in my life and why I had to put a notice up.

First: I have 100 books to read and review. I checked the other day and was like whoa dude, slow down! Not to mention the 20 requests still waiting for an answer in my inbox.
Eep!
Soooo many books, not enough day light!

Second: I’m in the midst of trying to move home. I currently live two hours from my family and finding an apartment is tough, to say the least. Between people being discriminatory or changing their price of their apartments constantly, it’s been tough. I just got home from visiting my mom for three weeks trying to view apartments.

Third but not the least: my uncle is really ill. I’m trying to move home because of  that, and because I am so not a big city girl. Gimme a small city, any day of the week.
My mom will drive herself insane trying to do everything for my uncle and my uncle will be stubborn, and they’ll butt heads. I know I’ll be needed to take some of the weight off my mom. And I miss my bestie, terribly!

I am sorry for those who are still awaiting book reviews. Or that I haven’t replied to yet. I do see you, and you’re in my mind. I’ll get to your books whenever I can.

 Happy Mother’s Day Readers

I hope all my readers who are Mama’s, Mama’s to be, Dad’s who are the Mama and Grandparents who are Mama as well and Fur-Mama’s are having a wonderful day. ❤

Have a great Sunday! ❤

Sunday Rumination: Abandoning Books

Rumination Sunday

Rumination Sunday is a place to step outside your reviews and talk about different things that affect day to day life, whether it is about books or not. Created by Leticia, Shh I am Reading

Today’s topic is about abandoning books. Whether you’re a couple of pages in or 100 pages in.

As a fellow reader and reviewer, I must put my two cents in for other readers and reviewers: It is okay to give up on books! Really, it is.

There. I said it. Whew!

After days, to nearly an entire week, of being consumed by the idea of giving up on a book that was requested of me to read and review.

As someone who suffers from anxiety, rumination is a dangerous alley-way to go down and promptly get lost in. It has sharp teeth and turns into a bigger monster.

Not every book ever written, no matter how popular, is meant for you as a reader.

I can think of a couple of popular books I gave up reading such as The Host by Stephenie Meyer and I gave up on Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs three times before convincing myself to try to finish it. Many times, I wish that I hadn’t pushed myself to read it because it forced me into a reading slump. Reading slumps suck.

So when is it okay to give up on a book?

  1. Slow moving.
  2. Difficult to get into.
  3. Too easy.
  4. Too difficult.
  5. Lacking character development.
  6. Lacking world development.
  7. Poor writing style.
  8. The topic is outside your reading interests.

And etc…

However, always give a book a chance. Sometimes the first few chapters are a slow build up to something awesome.

Always have a reading rule for yourself too.
I have a 50 page rule. If I can’t get into the book, I will put it down temporarily. I’ll conquer some of my other TBR pile. I’ll give the book another chance if I feel up to it, but eventually I will give it up.

There. I got that off my chest. Hopefully I’m not alone in agreeing that it is okay to give up on books. I’d rather that than to give a poor review!
