About the Book

Half vampire. Half human. 100% Badass.

Chloe Hunter can’t seem to stay out of trouble. Incarcerated by The Bureau after running amok for a century with a brood of vampires, grifting and terrorizing humanity, she’s ready to make up for her dark past. Luckily, when The Bureau would rather see her at the end of a wooden stake, in comes her new straight-laced handsome boss, Ethan Raines, who’s got other plans for the seductive ex-con.

An enigmatic and sexy vampire who finds Chloe’s hybrid blood and street prowess too irresistible to pass up, Ethan requests The Bureau to release her into his custody to protect the streets of New Orleans. Now, her debt to society is to punish other supernaturals who break the law and bring them to justice.

When Chloe’s creepy old gang involves her in a plot to unlock a mysterious box, she’s forced to make some hard choices that threaten to betray the trust of the man who’s given her a second chance at life and love. Ethan may have his work cut out for him in Tall, Dark & Deadly, the first steamy New Adult Paranormal Romance blockbuster in the Agents of The Bureau supernatural romance series!

Interview

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Sure! I was born and raised in Texas to a pair of Cajun parents. I was a Tomboy growing up, despite my Dad trying so hard to keep me a lady. Now my husband still fights that battle LOL. I’ve been writing fiction since I was 13 and after my much older friend smuggled me some romance books, I was smitten. I fell in love with romance and urban fantasies and it keeps me plenty busy. I venture into many genres of fiction, but I always come back to paranormal romance.

What inspired you to write?

I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I think it was my brother that continued to inspire me to keep writing. We both were big movie buffs and loved creating dialogue, so we both got into screenwriting. Mark continued on that path, but I kept exploring writing in different styles of fiction. I remember telling him that I was a bit embarrassed to write romance because so many people looked down on it. He told me to forget what others think and to just write for myself because I enjoy it. After that discussion, I wrote what I enjoyed and never looked back.

What inspired your novel?

It’s so funny it turned into a full-length novel! When I first started “Tall, Dark & Deadly”, I wanted to make a short story. I’ve always found making short stories challenging because I always end up fleshing it out more and more until it turns into a full length. I had written my first draft of my other book, “Selenium Night”, but wasn’t ready to publish it. I wanted to write something short and sweet–a “friends turn lovers” story with different characters–but not another full-length book. My rationale was to make a fun short story in the same vein of urban fantasy/paranormal romance to put out to the masses to see how people would like my style and storylines. Only then, would I have decided to be brave enough to put my full-length novel out there. (Laughs) Well, that was blown away after I decided to write it on Wattpad. Turned out, writing the story through the app forced me to think big picture and for the first time, really help me understand how to pace my story and keep my little audience engaged. Thanks to the readers on Wattpad, the story became something bigger than I ever hoped for. It was amazing, so I just ran with it. Chloe and Ethan were too fun to turn away and I’m glad I didn’t.

What is the genre?

It’s a Paranormal Romance with strong Urban Fantasy elements.

What draws you to this genre?

Oh my gosh, I LOVE world building! There are some amazing authors out there who possess such a beautiful imagination to create entire worlds that readers can wrap themselves in. As an avid reader of the genre, I could always appreciate the level of dedication it takes for an author to spin up a new reality for us to enjoy. Urban Fantasy is just so much fun and my generation was inundated with it growing up with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.” That’s why I just had to mention Buffy in the book regardless of how dated it made the book feel. I wanted to pay homage 🙂 I know this generation is all about “The Vampire Diaries” (which has become my guilty pleasure), but when I started falling in love with writing and reading paranormal romance/urban fantasy, it was all about Miss kickass Buffy!

But seriously, I love spooky things and creatures finding love. There’s something intriguing about strong women finding love in all the “wrong” places in the world of fantasy. Of angels, demons, ghosts, werewolves and your occasional blood sucker, all these paranormal metaphors are catalysts of what humans are and crave most…that we’re all different, beautiful and a little bit weird–and just want someone to love us for who we are.

How did you develop your plot and your characters?

I’m a recovering pantser, so I actually started with the character development. I knew I wanted a strong female character who was far from perfect. I wanted her to have a past where she was a bad guy and collide with a goody two-shoes. One of the themes in the story is redemption and that’s what Chloe wants. She wants people to trust her. That’s pretty hard though when you come out of incarceration and everyone is judging you. You may have served your time, but the judgement never really stops. That kinda adversity can do two things: it can force you to shut down and give up or it can fire you up and make you prove to the world you don’t need their approval and get on with your life. Chloe obviously took the latter.

It also doesn’t help that she’s a vampire-human hybrid. In that world, she’s actually the freak. She doesn’t belong and anytime you feel that level of exclusion from society, it’s gonna drive a bigger wedge between you and what society thinks. I think Chloe’s a badass because she’s got so much working against her, but still, she doesn’t let it break her. She’s my hero.

On the flip side, I probably didn’t imagine her hero, Ethan, such a prim and proper authority figure at first. He kinda developed that way organically. Because Chloe is so out there and gung-ho, it would’ve been absolute chaos without giving her some sort of an anchor. I needed a sage mentor for her. Someone who was wiser, older and on some level relate to Chloe and accept her for who she is. Ethan has seen so much and been around for so long, nothing should really amaze him. But somehow, something possesses him to take a chance on a hybrid ex-con and bring her on his team. So either he was bored or saw something in Chloe that he hadn’t seen before 🙂

In developing the plot, I kept thinking about interviews I watched and read about street gangs and small time criminals when they get out on parole. You aren’t supposed to connect with any felons per your parole release. You have a list of rules long as your arm to obey or else you go back in. It had me thinking about the gang Chloe ran with. The ones that got away would still be up to their hell-raising ways, while she was forced to walk the straight and narrow. So I thought, “Okay, I have to get the Boyettes to do something foul and in doing so, Chloe will already raise suspicions because it’s sadly ‘guilt by association’.” She’ll have to prove her loyalty to The Bureau and Ethan. What the Boyettes are up to can destroy and unravel a lot for not just The Bureau, but the world, so it’s game on to retrieve the box!

What inspired your protagonist?

Chloe is beautifully human. She’s flawed and hopeful and wants to be accepted. However, she’s also a “bad girl.” She’s tough and has this tenacity to her that makes the story work. When I thought about the ideal heroine for this book, I pictured her sitting in a jail cell, having this feeling of regret and resentment. She made some mistakes, and she sat back and let things happen instead of speaking up. Lots of us have experienced that kind of regret. It’s pretty character-forming, you know–having to live with a mistake where you are almost certain wouldn’t have happened if you’d just stepped up and said/done something. It doesn’t make you horrible, it just makes you human. So when I thought of a heroine, I wanted her to be someone who was destined to set things right.

What inspired your antagonist?

I’m a bit obsessed with villains who are a bit sociopathic. I’ve always read about the kinda gangs that were in the streets in New York at the turn of the century and there were some seriously bad guys. Twisted, hard-nosed guys that got away with a lot of wickedness. Inspiration to have a gang of brothers, the Boyettes, came from reading about the gangs like The Dead Rabbits and the Bowery Boys. Alistair is taunting and cruel, but he loves his brothers. He believes in family, but above all, he’s territorial and isn’t afraid to shock. He and his brothers didn’t get enough love before they turned and it spoiled them for all eternity.

What was the hardest part to write in the book?

The action! Don’t get me wrong I LOVE action! It’s not a shock that it found its way into my Paranormal Romance books. But, I wasn’t used to writing action in my style. I had to find my own rhythm and educate myself a LOT on realistic fighting as well as how to actually write action that wasn’t so technical it was boring or so abstract readers couldn’t visualize. That part was really tough.

What was your favourite part of your book to write?

It would have to be the mellow downtime in the story where Chloe and Ethan get to connect. The story is so fast paced, I welcomed the time where they could stop for a minute and get to know each other better. Ethan is so closed and reserved, it’s very hard to figure out what he’s thinking, at least from Chloe’s POV. When they calm down and talk, it’s downright touching and often hilarious.

Are you a full time or a part time writer? If part time, what do you do besides write?

When I’m not writing, I lead a team of fantastic techies at an Austin-based software company. I love doing anything creative, so if I’m not writing, I’m painting, reading, drawing, knitting–you name it! It all fights the dreaded writer’s block!

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading a collection of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter short stories titled “Love Bites.” It’s making me happy 🙂

Who would you say are your favourite authors?

I’m always on the lookout for the new and rising authors, but Gena Showalter writes some sizzling paranormal romance! Sherrilyn Kenyon’s magnum opus of world building keeps me inspired and giddy. Kresley Cole makes me need a glass of ice water nearby to read her work and L.A. Banks is reigning champ on urban fantasy with her “Vampire Huntress” Series. The writing world continues to miss her imagination and craft.

What are your future projects, if any?

Yes! I have a 2nd book to add to the Agents of the Bureau series. Leto’s story is in the works and if you read “Tall, Dark & Deadly,” I think you’ll understand why 😉 Also, I have another series I will start next year based on werewolf-like creatures called “ShadowShifters.” Yep, “Selenium Night” will be in the works for publication.

What is your preferred method for readers to get in touch with you and your books?

Feel free to stalk me on Facebook or Twitter as I hang on those a lot. Readers can always email me–I’ll always respond 🙂

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Two words: just write! Doesn’t matter how rough it comes out if you feel it sucks. Just write it! Let your imagination run wild and let your writing make its own path. Remember, you can always go back and re-tweak it. I just have one published book under my belt and I don’t plan on stopping there. The best thing a writer can do to hone their craft is practice and that only happens by writing. So stop finding excuses and write every day. Things will get better. Just write!

About the Book

As she hunts for a drug lord killing her fellow witches, all Tessa Lansa’s instincts point to the Grizzly motorcycle club. That might be because their leader, Bear, is the strong, silent shifter type: warm brown eyes and more muscle and alpha male than any woman can ignore. Which makes Tessa’s plan to seduce and betray him all the more dangerous…

Bear doesn’t trust the curvy, blue-eyed witch. But Tessa can heal the injuries that sap his strength. And since he can’t stop thinking of her lush body and teasing smile, her plan to mate him to reclaim her own power is highly tempting. Just one problem. Once a desire this wild is loose, no one will ever control it…

Excerpt

Who the hell was in his cabin? He stalked toward the front door, which remained open. Oh, he was going to scare this interloper. He sucked in air to snarl, rolling his neck so he could fully flash his canines.

A woman came into view, turning around, skirt rustling. “There you are.”

He paused and studied her. Thick black hair piled on her head, violet-blue eyes, smooth features. Delicate. Something stirred inside him, and he shook his head, trying to focus. Why wasn’t she scream- ing? Most people freaked out when faced with a grizzly bear. Wait a minute. He knew her. Didn’t he know her?

She pressed her hands to her hips. Her green houndstooth de- signer suit looked like something out of the fifties. Somehow, it worked on her. “Do you mind shifting back to human form? We need ta talk.”

The brogue. Irish brogue. Pretty eyes. Small stature. Sparks of power all around her.

It hit him then. A witch. There was a witch in his home. He growled again and set his bones to transforming into his human shape. The process took longer than it should have, considering he’d mainly been in bear form for nearly three months. Three useless months that hadn’t changed a damn thing about his failing health.

Pain lanced down his spine and through his arms. His bones broke and reformed, hurting much more than they should. The fur receded on his arms and then the rest of his body. Agony flared through his face, reshaping it, nearly making him black out. Finally, he straightened, his body elongating. He kept his expression stoic and tried to banish the ache.

“That looked painful,” she whispered, her gaze soft on his face. “It was,” he responded before he could think. Then reality crashed

back. “Why is there a Coven Nine witch in my fucking cabin?” His safe cabin in the Seattle wilderness where witches and the Coven Nine couldn’t get to him. What was her name? He couldn’t place it. Everything was cloudy. Yet he remembered seeing her in Ireland at witch headquarters—she was a council member. When was that? Months ago.

She hummed and looked around, her gaze high and a light pink dusting her cheekbones.

He settled his stance. His human brain kicked back in. “As a member of the Coven Nine, what are you doing here?” She was on the ruling council of witches, and she should have security all around her. His back stiffened, and he turned to scan for threats.

“I’m alone,” she said.

That was impossible. Yet even with his senses returning, he couldn’t find any other people near, much less any witches. “Why?” he barked. His voice was rough and hoarse from disuse.

She blew out air, her pretty lips pursing. Her gaze rose nearly to the rough wooden ceiling. If she craned her neck up any more, she might fall backward.

Bear frowned. “What the hell?”

She cleared her throat. “Do you, ah, do you mind?” Her hand swept out, even the small movement graceful.

“Mind what?” he snapped, glancing over his shoulder again. Trees

and silence met his gaze. Thunder ripped above, and an angry autumn rain began to slap the ground. Summer had given up the fight, and the oncoming winter scented the breeze. He stepped inside the cabin.

She backed up so quickly her butt hit the ancient stove, and she gave a startled eep. “Please, Mr. McDunphy.”

What in the world was wrong with the woman? “Please, what?” Was this some kind of trap?

“Put some clothes on,” she said through pearly-white teeth.

He started and looked down at his naked body. “Oh.”

About the Book

Zade Holder has always been a free-spirited young woman, from a long dynasty of tarot-card readers, fortunetellers, and practitioners of magick. Growing up in a small town and never quite fitting in, Zade is determined to forge her own path. She leaves her home in Tennessee to break free from her overprotective mother Dela, the local resident spellcaster and fortune teller.

Zade travels to Las Vegas and uses supernatural powers to become part of a premiere magic show led by the infamous magician Charles Spellman. Zade fits right in with his troupe of artists and misfits. After all, when everyone is slightly eccentric, appearing ”normal” is much less important.

Behind the scenes of this multimillion-dollar production, Zade finds herself caught in a love triangle with Mac, the show’s good-looking but rough-around-the-edges technical director and Jackson, the tall, dark, handsome and charming bandleader.

Zade’s secrets and the struggle to choose between Mac or Jackson creates reckless tension during the grand finale of the show. Using Chaos magick, which is known for being unpredictable, she tests her abilities as a spellcaster farther than she’s ever tried and finds herself at death’s door. Her fate is left in the hands of a mortal who does not believe in a world of real magick, a fortuneteller who knew one day Zade would put herself in danger and a dagger with mystical powers…

Handbook for Mortals is the first book in the series of this urban fantasy, paranormal romance series by author Lani Sarem.

Following Zade through the trials–and romance–of finding her own place in the world, readers will identify with their own struggles to fit in, reflected in the fantastic, yet mundane world of Zade’s life.

Handbook for Mortals is in development as a motion picture set to debut in 2018.

Excerpt

“Hopefully I wasn’t interrupting something important,” Mac said, with no attempt at feigning actual sincerity. I could tell he didn’t care that he had interrupted, or that he had been rude.

“Just kindness.” I responded. I don’t think he expected my answer to be truthful, and he looked taken aback. He had probably expected me to say “Oh, no worries! Nothing important.” He made no comment, but backed off a little. When he continued talking, he had a bit less snap in his voice.

“I’d like to schedule a crew call for you once your contract has been signed. You, me, and all of our techs, so we can go over your trick and map out how it will be safely implemented into the show.” He knew that calling what I had done a “trick” instead of an illusion I would take as a slight. It’s sort of like telling someone who had just won an Olympic gold medal and was proudly wearing it around their neck, that their necklace was cute. Mac kept incessantly tapping his Sharpie on the side of his clipboard and shifting his weight between his feet.

I stood up slowly and calculated, looking him square in the eye, which probably surprised him a bit since he was at least six feet tall. I’ve always enjoyed the luxury of being a tall girl. I’m five foot nine inches and so while I don’t usually tower above any guys I know, I can definitely look them directly in the eye. Most girls who at five feet five inches (which, I believe, is an average height for a woman) have to look up. My height was an advantage that I never took for granted and here, again, I was happy that I didn’t have to look up to him—figuratively or literally. In heels I could even be as tall or taller than him and I’ve always loved that part about being the height I am. I half smiled and slowly spoke, “Maybe you misunderstood. I don’t show anyone how it’s done. That wasn’t just for the audition. I handle this illusion on my own.”

Mac held still for a moment, and then glanced up from his clipboard, looking irritated. He pursed his lips and flared his nostrils. The tapping stopped. He dropped the clipboard from his stomach and held it in his hand while pointing his finger directly in my face. “Listen, lady, I don’t know who else you worked for, but we don’t do that Lone Ranger stuff around here. I’m the technical director and in charge of everyone’s safety, no matter how stupid you want to be. You do what I say, and I keep your pretty self from getting hurt. Got it?” I’m fairly certain he growled at me as he spoke.

Myriad thoughts ran through my head and I’m pretty sure several seconds passed in silence as we stared each other down. I could feel my hands tightening into fists. I really did want to punch him. I could see it happening. I’m not strong by any means but I’m also not a wimp. I wouldn’t have broken anything, but he would have been bruised and sore. I quickly ran through the possible outcomes of punching the technical director on my first day of work. It didn’t really seem to be the best idea.

I leaned into him so closely that it might have looked like to an outsider that I was about to kiss him. I huffed a little and my words were slow and deliberate. “I understand this is your job and all, but I don’t think you’re listening to me,” I hissed. I tapped his chest with my finger and he jolted a bit at my touch. He looked at me like I was speaking some kind of foreign language.

“I’m not listening? Lady, you need your ears cleaned,” he snarled back. He turned around to walk away, as if that was the end of our conversation. If he was trying to piss me off more, it was working.

I grabbed him by the shoulder, stopping him in his tracks and swinging him around to face me. My face had flushed and I’d raised my voice to a full yell. “And you need to get some manners. I’m not showing you how it’s done, okay? If we have a problem I can go to another show where the technical director doesn’t have a God complex. I’m not a girl who needs a knight in shining armor.” I was practically snarling at him.

Mac gritted his teeth and looked like he might hit me, but I knew that wasn’t really an option for him. Guys like him didn’t hit women, no matter how mad we made them. He laughed loudly. “Ha! Good luck finding a Technical Director who will treat you like the princess you clearly think you are. If I found you locked in a tower, I promise I’d leave you there.” Mac whipped around again and this time saw Riley, who had been standing just a few feet away from us the whole time. Riley was pretending not to be paying too much attention, but you could tell that was all he had been doing. I couldn’t blame him. Mac glowered at Riley and barked, “Where’s C.S.? Riley, go find Charles. Now!”

“On the move,” Riley replied with a nervous, almost panicked look on his face as he ran off to the side and disappeared.

Modern day history buff Elz Phoenix used to daydream of being a Southern belle in 1850s America. Now married to a man who can give her the world in any time, she’s doing exactly that. As their two families travel down the east coast, a new contender is drawn to the fire in Elz’s eyes. But no challenger could dissuade Devon from defending his heart’s desire, not even the daunting McGrail brothers, fresh from the Scottish Highlands.

Meanwhile, Griffin Valli is tired of time-hopping. He may be Elz’s brother, but history wasn’t on his list of favorites in college. After a few failed attempts at nineteenth-century romance, he’s headed home to the women of the twenty-first century as soon as the family vacation is over. He’s never liked charades, and he likes the games of high society even less. But then he crosses paths with a daring young lady and realizes his heart is in danger. Though he’s eager for a lover, Griffin has no intention of falling for the beautiful Mars LaFrance. Even so, fate is going to give him a run for his money.

Wedlove Castle, Northern England
18 April 1829
Devon Phoenix

I tugged at Kyle’s arm, and he and my baby sister ceased their flirtations. She closed her door, and Kyle and I turned, continuing down the corridor toward our rooms.

I glanced at him sharply. “Flirt.”

“I’ll own that without any shame whatsoever,” Kyle said, laughing. “I’m sure I won’t be the only flirt. You, no doubt, will be a regular Adonis come these next few weeks when you get your Miss Valli in those mighty arms of yours.”

A thrill shot through me, and I couldn’t help but grin. I would soon be meeting Elz and bringing her home to be my wife.

The thrill was smothered by another thought—the thought of what Faramond warned would happen to her when we met.

I felt my cheerful expression sink into a grim smile. “Yes, well, with everything Faramond told us tonight about others wanting my Miss Valli for themselves, let us hope I don’t do as Adonis did and get myself killed by some angry god who’s turned himself into a wild boar.”

“No,” Kyle said, trying to bring back my joy. “You won’t do that—you’ll have me watching your back. And you know I’m cleverer than any ole boar, or any Greek god for that matter.”

He laughed, but my good mood was gone.

I felt sick to think of all that Faramond had told me. I wanted to give Elz a normal, happy life, but that wouldn’t be the tradeoff. Maybe she would be better off without me. If we never met, the flame would never burn bright enough for others to see it, and she wouldn’t need protection; therefore, she wouldn’t need me.

My heart sank, and I was bombarded with sadness at such a notion.

But maybe it would be for the best.

The thought made me miss her even more than I already did.

“Look, Kyle, I don’t mean to be rude with an abrupt departure, but I miss my girl. We’ll have to part ways here, old friend. I’ll see you at breakfast.”

Kyle offered a sympathetic smile, nodding his understanding, and we split up as I set into a fast jog toward my rooms.

I shrugged out of my topcoat and tossed it over a chair, doing the same with my cravat and waistcoat, then unfastened my trousers and sat to strip my feet bare. Unable to wait another moment, I rose, pulling my shirttail free as I headed barefoot across the carpet, striding toward the only thing that connected me to Elz—the mirror.

Stepping onto the platform of carved mountains at the base of the frame, I leaned in and breathed a fog over the glass, placing the fingertips of one hand there, and called Elz to me.

Her image became clear, and desire weaved its way around my gut like a choking vine. I exhaled slowly.

“Have mercy on me, my love—I can see you’ll be tormenting me tonight.”

About the Book

Working as an informant for the DEA, Victoria Monzelle is used to living on the edge. But she’s not a big fan of getting kidnapped. And definitely not by a bunch of bad boy witches with fancy-colored fire to shoot at people. So when Adam Dunne shows up and claims to be a witch enforcer, she’s not going to put her life in his hands based on his word, no matter how smooth and smart and beautifully Irish his words sound. But on the run from a tribunal of witches, she isn’t going to make it far . . .

Before she knows it, Adam’s word is all that stands between her and execution. Sophisticated, just-gotta-ruffle-him Adam has vowed to make her his one eternal mate, wild and unpredictable as she is—to save her from a sentence of certain death. But Tori isn’t interested in being anyone’s pity date. And if they think she’s unpredictable now, they should see what’s coming next . . .

Excerpt

So far, the magical world of Ireland sucked eggs. Her dreams of rolling hills, rugged men, and wild adventures had given way to facts that tilted her universe, spun it around, and spiked it headfirst into the ground.
The world held too many secrets.
Tori Monzelle leaned her shoulders against the cold interior wall of the van and tried to blink through a tight blindfold. Nothing. She couldn’t see a thing. The carpet in the rear of the van smelled fresh but was rough against her pants, while she sat with her knees drawn up and her hands tied behind her back.
A metallic taste filled her mouth. Her mind whirled, and she tried to focus, but her breath panted out of her lungs as if somebody squeezed them.
The vehicle hiccuped a couple of times but ran smoothly for now. It would experience a mechanical glitch at some point. Her curse was predictable. At least then she could run.
She cleared her throat. The whole situation was just so surreal. If she could get the two kidnappers to stop the van, maybe she could get free. “Listen, jackasses. I’m done with this entire kidnapping scenario. I promise not to tell anybody that supernatural beings exist. Just let me go.”
A snort came from the front seat. “Supernatural,” one of the men muttered.
Her chest heated. “So you think you’re natural. Then how about I refrain from announcing your species even exists?”
Another snort.
Where were they taking her? The sounds of drizzling rain and honking horns filtered in from outside, while the two men breathed loudly in the front seats. She hadn’t recognized either of them when they’d arrived at the penthouse an hour before. For an entire week, she’d been held hostage in various luxurious Dublin locales after having been kidnapped from Seattle. The last penthouse where she’d been kept even had a piano. Finally, she’d been able to play music and had created a new score.
Then they’d come for her—again. This was the first time she’d been blindfolded during relocation. That couldn’t be good.
Had it only been a week since she’d learned the world wasn’t as she’d thought?
Immortal beings existed. As in really existed.
“Are you witches, demons, or vampires?” If she had to guess, they were witches. They were just a different species from humans. So far, she’d seen witches create and throw fireballs, and she’d met a demon who’d shown her his fangs. She had to go on faith that vampires really existed, but at this point, why not believe? “Mr. Kidnappers?”
No answer. She’d seen their faces; the only reason to blindfold her now was to keep her lost and confused. So she couldn’t find her way back to safety. She shuddered.
The van swerved, and she knocked her head against the side.
“Ouch.” It was time to get free. “This is international kidnapping.”
Did witches care about international laws? Her shoulders shook, and a welcome anger soared through her.
The van jerked.
“What the hell?” one of the guys snapped.
The world tilted.
Something sputtered. The engine?
An explosion rocked the van, and it started to spin. Her temple smacked metal. Pain flashed white and red behind her eyes. She rolled to the other side across the carpet. Breath swooshed from her lungs. Blood welled on her lip, and she blinked behind the blindfold.

Nathan Davenport is being stalked by Isabella Ravini, the feral vampire who stole his human life over a hundred and sixty years ago. She made him her fledging, a slave for her dark, evil purposes-hunting humans. After a few years she released him, and Nathan reluctantly learned to accept the cursed life she’d foisted upon him. Over time he amassed a great fortune, which today has made him famous worldwide. Isabella decides she wants to be a part of this world of fame and fortune Nathan created for himself. She’s determined to marry him, and love has nothing to do with it. His money is her primary target, and the fame and prestige attached to being the wife of one of the richest men in the world wouldn’t be so bad either. In an effort to evade her until he can figure out how to stop her, he hides at a safe house he owns in New Orleans. One Saturday evening in NOLA, he decides to have dinner in the city. He chooses a quiet little Italian bistro, never imagining this night will change his life forever. The human woman who delivers his order isn’t a server, but the restaurant’s sous chef, a beautiful ethnic woman possessing the most delicious blood scent he’s ever encountered. The moment Mia Peebles arrives at his table with his plate, tasting her becomes an obsession. Mia wants nothing to do with him because of Nathan’s reputation as a playboy. So Nathan enchants her, feeds from her, but his lusts for her blood and body play havoc with his thinking. Nathan finds a way to bring her into his life as his personal chef and quickly falls in love with her. The trouble is Mia has no idea he’s a vampire because during the enchanting episodes, Nathan blocked her memories of those sensual encounters. How will Nathan tell her the truth without losing her and keep Isabella from finding him? Or worst yet, will Isabella discover how much Mia has come to mean to him?

“You’re having a very late dinner.”
Mia’s head shot up, her gaze slashing toward her right. The speaker was that drop-dead-gorgeous man she’d delivered the one top order to earlier, and he was standing beside her holding a glass of wine. She swallowed the bite in her mouth and said,
“This tends to be my normal dinner hour. How was your dinner?” She was surprised to still find him here but not unusual she supposed. Tavania’s was one of the tamer establishments here on Bourbon Street. Guests, whether single or in a group, often came here to eat, hook up to Wi-Fi and work, or just hang out in a nonparty atmosphere.
“Amazing, actually. You’re a talented chef.” He took up residence on the stool next to her and sat his glass on the bar.

Mia noticed him studying her. His eyes, the most beguiling she’d ever seen, held intrigue. She felt a little unnerved by his perusal, but she chalked it up to a customer desiring to speak to the chef. It happened all the time. Mostly with Joe because he was head chef. Happy guests often asked to speak to him. She had a roll to play. So play it she would. Mia pushed aside her plate and smiled.
“I’m Mia Peebles. Is this your first time at Tavania’s?” She extended her hand. He gave it a cordial shake.
“Yes. I drove by tonight and decided it might be a quiet place to do some work. Not so much, but I managed to accomplish what I needed to. I’m Nathan Davenport.” Mia laughed.
“Yes, it was a bit crazy tonight. It’s good to meet you, Nath—” She broke off and glared at him. Her heart did a little trip over in her chest when her brain cells began to fire and comprehend the name the man had given her.
“Oh my god,” she breathed. Suddenly, his features began to morph with the memories of numerous news and other TV show interviews she’d witnessed over the last ten years or so. Nathan Davenport was a real estate mogul and currently the richest man in the United States and possibly worldwide. Also the most sought-after bachelor on the planet. A playboy. He had a different supermodel or Hollywood starlet on his arm every other picture or interview taken of him.

He looked amused.
“I guess you know who I am.”
“Duh.” She laughed, picked up her glass of wine, and sipped.
“My biggest question is, how did you end up here? I thought you lived in New York.”
“I do primarily, but I have a number of homes, and one of my favorites is here in New Orleans in the heart of one of the historical districts. Circumstances have brought me to the city. Unfortunately, I don’t have a private chef here, just a housekeeper, so I went out for the evening.”
Mia blinked at him. A private chef ? Wow! Of course a man like him would have all sort of household and personal staff. Her background was redneck, Missouri rural. Just having food on the table every day for her ex-husband and children had been a miracle of God for many years. That kind of wealth stymied her.
In her four years with Joe, she’d had many encounters with well-to-do folk and had learned to accept and accommodate their eccentricities. Not every wealthy patron she’d met were all up in their stuff, but she suspected Nathan Davenport about as spoiled as a rich person could get.
“What?” he demanded, grinning at her.
“Nothing. Just glad you happened by tonight and enjoyed your meal. And truly, I hope you’ll visit Tavania’s again.” She tried for a kind smile then stood, intending to take her half-eaten plate and wine glass to the dish pit. He laid a hand on her arm, halting her. “Are you finished for the evening?”
Mia’s smile faded. There was a hungry look in his eyes, which had nothing to do with food, and she didn’t like the implications. “No. I’m closing tonight and have another hour or so ahead of me. Why?”
“I was going to ask you if you’d like to have a drink with me when you’re finished. I’d be happy to wait.” His expression seemed polite enough. Maybe her thinking was a little harsh. He’d been completely cordial, but Mia was forty-two years old and wise enough to recognize a player when she saw one.
“That’s very kind of you, but no. It’s been an extremely long day, and I’m beat, but I appreciate the invite.”
He appeared disappointed, but Mia didn’t care. She hadn’t dated since her divorce. Hadn’t had time and certainly tonight, she had no time for a guy like Davenport. The man would have been a temptation for a nun.
She’d lived like one for the last five years because work left her no time for a social life. However, she wasn’t thinking very sisterly thoughts at the moment, which solidified her refusal. That and the fact he was Nathan Davenport. Dating required commonalities. She couldn’t think of one they might share. She’d taken several steps away from the bar when she heard him speak.
Mia, look at me.
His voice had taken on a deep hypnotic tone, which seemed to echo in her head. In fact, it seemed to only be in her head, not audible. The strangeness of that reality should have been terrifying, yet something compelled her to turn and face him. She sat her dishes on the bar.
“Come with me.” He gave her a kind, reassuring smile.
She opened her mouth to say, Hell, no, but the word that came out instead was, “Okay.”

Her heart tumbled over in her chest. Mia realized she was seriously losing it because she allowed him to escort her out the front door of the restaurant without a peep. As hard as she tried to get her feet to obey her mind’s order to run back inside the restaurant, they were useless. They just kept taking her the direction he led them. Her voice was useless too. Her jaws felt locked.

He’s always loved her, hasn’t he? Only problem is he’s in a shifter settlement. With her mixed blood, they won’t welcome her any more warmly than the Romani. About the Book

Germany, 1940

Half Romani, Tairin’s no stranger to hiding her mixed blood from gypsy caravans. What she can’t hide is her perpetual youth, courtesy of her shifter heritage. Every few years, she drops out of sight, resurfacing in a new country to join a caravan where no one knows her. She’s overstayed her welcome where she is, but Germany is at war, and travel has become all but impossible for everyone targeted by the Reich.

Elliott’s clairvoyance is strong, even for a Romani. Seer for all the caravans in Germany, he catches Tairin eavesdropping outside their leader’s wagon one night. He should turn her in, but it would mean her execution, and he can’t bring himself to do that. Instead, he interrogates her. Her magic is different, but he can’t figure out quite what she is.

Any association between Romani and shifters is forbidden, and Tairin shields herself from Elliott’s probing. She should leave right now, tonight. It would be easy enough. Shift to her wolf form and run, keeping out of hunters’ gunsights. She’s on the edge of flight when Elliott suggests a covert task to prove her loyalty. Tairin agrees immediately, kicking herself for being weak where he’s concerned. Shifters and Romani have no future together. Zero. Zilch.

She should be smart about this and vanish into the night—before he discovers what she is and destroys her.

About the Book

Germany, 1940

Magic runs strong in Ilona, a gypsy seer. Powerful ability isn’t valued in Romani women, so she focuses her fortunetelling on inconsequential details. Nothing that could come back to haunt her caravan if a prediction went bad. Rounded up and dumped in Dachau prison camp, she has plenty of time to rue her decision to downplay her ability. If she’d taken the time to scry her own future, she’d still be free.

A wolf shifter, Jamal made the mistake of wedding a Romani woman centuries ago. His arrogance caused both death and heartache, and he’s been alone ever since. The recent threat of vampires joining the Third Reich has provided ample reason for shifters and Rom to lay their ancient enmity aside and work together, but their détente is fragile.

Jamal and a group of shifters come across Ilona after her escape from Dachau. Vulnerable, terrified, she’s fully prepared to fight. Her courage and mettle touch places in him he’d thought were dead, but she’s Romani. His last relationship ended so badly, the last thing he needs is to fall for another gypsy woman. He wrestles his tumbling emotions into submission, but when she trains her enigmatic, gray gaze on him, his resolve first weakens and then vanishes entirely.

About the Author

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains. It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.

Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.

In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.

Death May Be The End…
But Love Doesn’t Give A @&%#.

Murderer…
Jace Camden is haunted by his past. One that has many believing he got
away with murder. He’s on the run from it, trying to start a new life in a new
town. But his past won’t let won’t him escape, and it’s determined that his future will not long.
Death will demand its due… and his dead wife will make sure that debt is paid in full.

Kitt Thomas’ life is in a rut, but that changed when she looked into the sad, haunted eyes, of Jace Camden. Something about his wounded soul called to her—like a like a whisper of a melody in a mysterious abyss she should have the sense to ignore.

But his past will make sure Kitt is no more part of Jace’s future than life is.
Because he’s Soul Bound – and that’s a shackle that can only be broken by death.
His.

It’s not about the Happily Ever After…
It’s about surviving the read.

*Warning – this book deals with the subject of death, grief in a graphically realistic and dark manner*

Kitt head tilted as she narrowed her eyes, and asked, “Want to talk about her?”

Jace turned his gaze to look out over the water and shook his head as his lips pressed into a thin line. She nodded, began walking more and he followed in relief— so grateful in the fact she didn’t push and had the intuition to know he didn’t want her to. His thumb rubbed over her knuckles as they walked in silence, with the sand still warm from the day under their toes. She stopped again and he turned to face her, mentally braced for her to inquire for more—dreaded what it would entail or how he could divert answering.

“How long?”

Jace sighed and closed his eyes before he answered, “Five years.”

She nodded in silence and squeezed his hand as they began moving again. He once more found himself smiling at Kitt’s unobtrusive questions and gentle manner with which she handled the situation. This time he paused their motion and Kitt turned to face him as he asked quietly, “You? Married? Boyfriend?”

She laughed softly and smiled as she shook her head. “No. Well. I’ve had boyfriends, but never married. None stayed around long enough to ask me to do the deed.”

Kitt did a cute “oh” expression at his raised eyebrow partnered with a smirk and clarified herself, “Oh I’ve done that deed. I mean. Oh hell, that was way too much information.” She blushed and he found it absolutely delicious. “Way to go, Kitt. Way. To. Go.” She mumbled and looked down at the sand.

He chuckled as he tugged her back into motion and she closed the distance between them, scuffing her feet in the sand. Now their hands and their arms made contact; the sensation from her touch set Jace at a low burn. Her flesh so warm, soft yet firm and he found himself wondering once again what she tasted like. It sent his mind once again on a path he had not traveled in years and he blocked it off—the draw to her like a flickering flame to his in the dark soul. One he must keep in check and his soul would have to stay where the nightmare of his existence had placed it.

They continued in silence with Jace catching Kitt cutting side glances his way. He hoped he seemed relaxed, and prayed she didn’t try to look deeper. She would see an underlying tension of him preparing for something bad to happen—as it always did. Well, she knew he had lost someone he loved which was bound to make anyone edgy—perhaps she would notch his nerves to that. When they reached a small fishing pier, she pulled on his hand to bring him to a stop once again. He readied himself to answer another one of her gentle questions. But instead, she stepped forward, reached out with a feather light touch and brushed his cheek with her fingertips. Jace frowned in puzzlement as he fought the urge to step away from the gesture. But he relished her warmth as he closed his eyes when she pressed her palm against his cheek and ran her thumb along his temple.

“Why do I feel like you need to be touched?” She said in a hushed whisper. “Why do you seem so sad? What is going on under your surface and why am I so drawn to it?”

Jace swallowed and thought. Please don’t be. He knew that he was like the darkest of riptides and Kitt seemed like such a wonderful person—he would hate for her to be sucked under the surface of his sorrow and drown with him. The guilt would be too great and he could not carry more. “This was a mistake.”

He went to pull away to correct that misstep in judgement but then she cupped his face. Jace’s eyes slid open to find her looking perplexed and realized she must have thought him strange. He let out a pained sound, continued to move away but she grabbed his arms and stopped him gently. She suddenly needed to learn and try to understand the enigma of Jace Camden—not sure as to why…

Lexie Miles, a southern belle living her dream life in Paris, is devastated when her best friend Emma is brutally raped and murdered by vampires. From that moment Lexie’s “perfect world” begins to crumble. She discovers her entire life has been a sham and everyone she cares about has been lying to her. Angry doesn’t begin to describe her reaction to the news.

Plunged into a two-thousand year old war between good and evil, she is propelled into a world of blood, lust and dark secrets. She must embrace her birthright to fight an ancient threat to humanity. Bequeathed with the dubious gift of being the “Chosen One,” Lexie meets the enigmatic Etienne Benoit. She falls hard for him and when he betrays her, she vows to get revenge. After all, she is a vampire executioner and killing vampire is what she does.

Emma slumped against the back seat as the taxi pulled away from Lexie’s apartment. Heart still pounding, she focused on breathing deeply to quiet her nerves. She couldn’t remember ever being as unraveled as she had been when she had seen Francois and Marielle on the Champs Elysees. They had recognized Lexie and that boded trouble.

She stepped down from the taxi in front of her apartment. “Please wait for me. I won’t be long,” she said to the driver handing him twenty Euros.

He smiled, happy she was not just another cheap foreigner trying to get a free ride.

After she locked and bolted her front door behind her, she felt relieved, but she no longer knew if she was safe anywhere. She wondered if Francois and Marielle were watching or had followed her home. Her thoughts lingered on Francois. She had fallen hard and fast and now her hopes and dreams centered on him. The last time they had met alone Francois had promised her many things. To leave Marielle and be with her, heal the rift with his father and leave the dark side. She touched her lips where the memory of his last kiss lingered. She still couldn’t believe he wanted her. She knew the risks – vampires are not to be trusted – especially the dark ones. She had promised Francois she would tell no one and kept her promise. Tonight it had taken everything she had not to blurt out her secret to Lexie. She hated lying and worried Lexie was now vulnerable.

Everything the Society had worked for and stood for was in danger now that Francois and Marielle knew of the precious antiserum and its formula. When they had first approached her several weeks prior, Francois had done most of the talking. His good looks and smooth compliments had turned her head. He had compelled her and the only thing that had saved her from falling completely under his will was the human serum mixed with verveine she took daily. But it had not prevented her from falling in love with him.

Despite her strong feelings for Francois, she had managed to keep her wits. Instead of giving him what he wanted she devised an elaborate plan to conceal the authentic antiserum and formula. As she reviewed the details she felt confident the life-saving items would be safe. She was playing with fire, surviving the night was uncertain.

Tonight she was meeting Francois in the Jardin de Tuillieries to give him the fake antiserum and formula. It was a test to make sure he would be true to his word. She could only hope he loved her. He assured her he did.

She surveyed her Provence-style decor with its hues of orange, red and sunflower yellow. She loved her place with its treasures from home – the small antique carriage clock that had belonged to her grandmother, and the beautiful old steamer trunk that she used as a coffee table. They were her Dad’s loving contribution to her apartment.

The vial of clear liquid and formula caught her eye. She opened a small Printemps shopping bag, placed each item inside, and stuffed it in her purse.

Would she ever see her home again?

She shrugged off her sudden departure into sadness, and ran down the stairs freeing her hair from its customary bun. Francois preferred it loose and flowing. Besides, it made her feel sexier. She gave the taxi driver the address of a small internet café near the Jardin de Tuilleries.

<><><>

Emma sat at one of the computers going over and over her e-mail to Etienne and Tom. She gathered her courage, entered the next day’s date and pushed the send later button. She left the café, turning right toward the Tuilleries, and pulled the collar of her jacket close. The night was cold and clear. She entered the garden, and paused, listening for any strange noise before proceeding along the path. The full moon and soft white lights strung in the surrounding trees showed her the way.

“Bon nuit, cherie,” a silky male voice whispered in her ear.

Emma’s heart almost stopped. The first rush of carnal heat moved through her body. He surprised her.

“Bon nuit,” she replied, turning to face him. Francois’ handsome face was lost in shadow. His wintry blue eyes were all she could see. Delicious and dangerous. “Come into the trees,” he said taking her hand. She followed him into the underbrush glancing over her shoulder.

“Have you kept your promise?”

“I told no one, not even Lexie. and I made sure no one was following me. I would never disobey your instructions. Your trust means everything to me.”

“Do you have the package?”

“I have what you asked for.”

“That is good cherie.” He stroked her face with his hand.

She shivered at his touch and fought to keep a cool head.

“Give them to me,” he said.

“In a moment. Have you thought about your promises?”

“We can talk about that later. We are together and alone,” he said. “That’s more important.

Emma took a step back. She needed a little distance to think. “By the way, why did you and Marielle approach my friend and me tonight? It was awkward.”

“We were out for a stroll and noticed you admiring the necklace. Marielle insisted on meeting her.” Francois stroked her cheek again.

“I was afraid you wouldn’t be able to get away from her tonight.” Emma said.

“Don’t worry about her. Elle est une musaraigne.”

Emma couldn’t help but smile at his use of the word shrew.

“After five hundred years I am sick of her nagging and jealous fits.” He reached to take her in his arms.

Emma clutched her purse closer, still hesitant to give in too soon. “I’ve missed you.” The beating of heart sounded like thunder in her ears.

“But cherie it’s only been a few hours since we last met.” Once more he caressed her cheek.

Emma shivered at his touch. “It’s seems like an eternity and you were with Marielle.”

“Perhaps I have been a little too délicat with you.” His silky voice turned her insides to mush. He raised her chin and gazed into her eyes. Emma felt a pulling sensation. “Maybe you want a little walk on the wild side, n’est pas? Let me have my way with you and I will leave Marielle and come to your light side.” He grazed her cheek with his lips.

“Don’t tease me,” Emma whispered. “You know how I feel about you.”

About the Book

Duty was all that mattered. Until he met her.

Thora has known only life on one side of the fence, sheltered in a village of half-breeds, free of the magic the witches and Fae crave. Yet, past the fence, the woods tempt her to discover what lies beyond the village. Nothing prepared her for what she’d find on the other side.

As a descendant to the Fae Queen Tatiana, Garrett has devoted his life to protecting the breeds. When he finds Thora in the woods, he promises her a new life in the Council run Sanctuary, safe from those who would abuse her.

But the Sanctuary holds dark secrets, and the haven Garrett promised is far more dangerous than the woods. As they work to unravel the deception of the Council, passion and duty collide, threatening the very lives Garrett swore to protect.

Garrett knew sacrifices would need to be made, he just never realized it could be the woman he’s claimed as his.

Excerpt

She thought going to the Sanctuary was what she wanted, what would make her happy, but in the woods she had Garrett. Once she left…she didn’t know what was out there for her.

The trees rustled, their leaves tickling the sides of the shield. Were they closing in? Did they know how badly she just wanted to stay here?

The touch of Garrett’s fingers against her arm caused her to jump, and she turned to him. He knew. His hand slid into the hair at her nape, cupping her head, and he lowered his eyes until they were level with hers. The intensity burning in them caused a delicious shiver to run through her.

“We need to do this, Thora,” he said, his voice low and calm. “The woods wait for no one.”

She didn’t think she could explain this to him. He was all she knew. All she had left. Would he even understand the fear that coursed through her at the thought of him leaving her?

“I don’t -”

The sudden press of his lips ended her hesitant words. He consumed her senses, and every thought she had evaporated as her eyes drifted shut and she pressed into him. His tongue slipped into her mouth and caressed hers, teasing her with the taste of him.

He pulled back, and she groaned in frustration as yet again she was left wanting more of him. Desire had been such a remote concept for her. She’d seen it shared between the couples in the village, even between her parents, but she’d never experienced passion until Garrett. Now that she had, she was reluctant to dismiss it so easily.

He untangled his hand from her hair and then locked his fingers with hers. Her eyes fluttered open, and she stared up at him.

“We go now,” he said and pulled her along with him through the barrier.

Still reeling from his kiss, Thora followed him. The trees had shifted since she woke. Tightening ever so slightly, like her hesitation to leave had stirred them again. An unsettled feeling of suspicion dispelled the excitement Garrett’s kiss roused in her.

“Garrett? Why did you kiss me?”

He didn’t answer, just wove her through the trees and bushes toward the edge. They were only a few yards away, yet each step they took brought them no closer. Finally, Garrett stopped, and she rammed into his back. He twisted around to look down at her, and she gave him a nervous smile.

“I kissed you because I wanted to. Because I don’t want you to worry about the future. I won’t let anything happen to you, Thora.” He stroked his thumb in soothing circles along the back of her hand. “There is no place safer for you than the Sanctuary.”

“Promise?”

The corners of his lips tipped up. “I promise.”
