One man must stop a psychopath in his tracks…

Chief Inspector Jack Grayson is hunting a serial killer terrorizing London, a stalker who watches his prey carefully and displays the bodies of his young female victims brazenly. But Grayson has a problem – only one lead and scant evidence – and the body count is rising.

He discovers that an unsolved 18-year-old murder case bears all the hallmarks of the current killings, but he still can’t seem to find a single, obvious suspect, and he is so far unable to outthink a master predator.

Grayson must catch a hunter who knows how to outwit the police – a showman intent on completing his macabre collection. But he’s missing a vital clue, a critical piece of the puzzle. When he finally discovers the killer’s identity, he’s completely unprepared for the fallout…

He eyed the almost empty champagne bottle, a couple more and he could get quite a bit of information out of her. All the information he would need, in fact.

“We should get another bottle in for good measure,” he said.

“Can give you a lap dance if you like or we can go for a private, if you prefer?” she said, keeping her gaze fixed on him. Her large green eyes seemed to communicate the promise of some kind of sexual satisfaction if he said yes.

He nodded. “Lap dance sounds good.”

“Here then?” He nodded again. He quite enjoyed the whole performance of a public lap dance. It was the theatre of it, the jealous attention you got from the other punters, as a naked or scantily clad woman writhed in your lap.

It was all fake, of course. He knew that. He knew every stripper lied; you could see it barely concealed in their eyes even as they offered up their bodies so seductively, but he didn’t care. For a moment he could pretend it was real, and anyway, he wasn’t particularly discerning when it came to feelings.

Her real name was Marilyn, he learned, and she didn’t have a stage name like some of the other strippers he’d known. It was an apt name for such a pocket Venus.

Marilyn was good at faking it too, her bare breasts thrust in his face, her scantily clad crotch grinding hard against his own. So good, he wondered for just a second if perhaps she wasn’t faking it at all. Could that look in her eyes that told him how much she wanted him be genuine? Apparently not. Three lap dances later and four hundred pounds poorer than he’d gone in, he left the club, alone.

Sexually frustrated, but with the necessary information he needed, he smiled to himself as he made his way to the tube, traces of her perfume clinging to his shirt. The memory of the unpleasant meeting with his Mother temporarily replaced by the recollection of Marilyn’s soft flesh beneath his fingertips.

Marilyn may have been pretending but he was deadly serious. And by the time he was done with her, it wouldn’t matter much what her true feelings were.

Death May Be The End…
But Love Doesn’t Give A @&%#.

Murderer…
Jace Camden is haunted by his past. One that has many believing he got
away with murder. He’s on the run from it, trying to start a new life in a new
town. But his past won’t let won’t him escape, and it’s determined that his future will not long.
Death will demand its due… and his dead wife will make sure that debt is paid in full.

Kitt Thomas’ life is in a rut, but that changed when she looked into the sad, haunted eyes, of Jace Camden. Something about his wounded soul called to her—like a like a whisper of a melody in a mysterious abyss she should have the sense to ignore.

But his past will make sure Kitt is no more part of Jace’s future than life is.
Because he’s Soul Bound – and that’s a shackle that can only be broken by death.
His.

It’s not about the Happily Ever After…
It’s about surviving the read.

*Warning – this book deals with the subject of death, grief in a graphically realistic and dark manner*

Kitt head tilted as she narrowed her eyes, and asked, “Want to talk about her?”

Jace turned his gaze to look out over the water and shook his head as his lips pressed into a thin line. She nodded, began walking more and he followed in relief— so grateful in the fact she didn’t push and had the intuition to know he didn’t want her to. His thumb rubbed over her knuckles as they walked in silence, with the sand still warm from the day under their toes. She stopped again and he turned to face her, mentally braced for her to inquire for more—dreaded what it would entail or how he could divert answering.

“How long?”

Jace sighed and closed his eyes before he answered, “Five years.”

She nodded in silence and squeezed his hand as they began moving again. He once more found himself smiling at Kitt’s unobtrusive questions and gentle manner with which she handled the situation. This time he paused their motion and Kitt turned to face him as he asked quietly, “You? Married? Boyfriend?”

She laughed softly and smiled as she shook her head. “No. Well. I’ve had boyfriends, but never married. None stayed around long enough to ask me to do the deed.”

Kitt did a cute “oh” expression at his raised eyebrow partnered with a smirk and clarified herself, “Oh I’ve done that deed. I mean. Oh hell, that was way too much information.” She blushed and he found it absolutely delicious. “Way to go, Kitt. Way. To. Go.” She mumbled and looked down at the sand.

He chuckled as he tugged her back into motion and she closed the distance between them, scuffing her feet in the sand. Now their hands and their arms made contact; the sensation from her touch set Jace at a low burn. Her flesh so warm, soft yet firm and he found himself wondering once again what she tasted like. It sent his mind once again on a path he had not traveled in years and he blocked it off—the draw to her like a flickering flame to his in the dark soul. One he must keep in check and his soul would have to stay where the nightmare of his existence had placed it.

They continued in silence with Jace catching Kitt cutting side glances his way. He hoped he seemed relaxed, and prayed she didn’t try to look deeper. She would see an underlying tension of him preparing for something bad to happen—as it always did. Well, she knew he had lost someone he loved which was bound to make anyone edgy—perhaps she would notch his nerves to that. When they reached a small fishing pier, she pulled on his hand to bring him to a stop once again. He readied himself to answer another one of her gentle questions. But instead, she stepped forward, reached out with a feather light touch and brushed his cheek with her fingertips. Jace frowned in puzzlement as he fought the urge to step away from the gesture. But he relished her warmth as he closed his eyes when she pressed her palm against his cheek and ran her thumb along his temple.

“Why do I feel like you need to be touched?” She said in a hushed whisper. “Why do you seem so sad? What is going on under your surface and why am I so drawn to it?”

Jace swallowed and thought. Please don’t be. He knew that he was like the darkest of riptides and Kitt seemed like such a wonderful person—he would hate for her to be sucked under the surface of his sorrow and drown with him. The guilt would be too great and he could not carry more. “This was a mistake.”

He went to pull away to correct that misstep in judgement but then she cupped his face. Jace’s eyes slid open to find her looking perplexed and realized she must have thought him strange. He let out a pained sound, continued to move away but she grabbed his arms and stopped him gently. She suddenly needed to learn and try to understand the enigma of Jace Camden—not sure as to why…

She just wants to use him for revenge.

Him.
A billionaire MMA fighter whose cocky smile and washboard abs make wet panties drop left and right.
She thinks she wants him for one amazing night out and end it.
Boy, did she think wrong.

He’s about to teach her how much more she really wants.

LISA
Finding out your husband’s cheating is hard.
Finding out it’s with a college girl is even harder.
The easy part? Retribution: beating him blue with a baseball bat and kicking him to the curb.
But it’s still not enough.

So when Bobby Carter, fresh out of college, blows back into town with all the intensity of a hurricane, I decide I’m not done.
Bobby’s everything my ex-husband is not. Sexy, aggressive, and intense.
Like melt me into a puddle intense.

Who cares if I used to babysit him?
He’s a grown man, now. And I mean, FULLY grown.

All I wanted was a night out with him, but one taste and I’m addicted.

BOBBY
When Lisa Howard finally gets rid of her cheating husband, I want to take her right then and there.
I got rid of that abusive bastard and built a billion dollar empire all for her.
Nothing could satisfy my ravenous hunger but taking a bite of that sweet little thing.

So when she offers herself up to me for one night, I’m not about to refuse.
She’s nothing like the sorority bimbos at Northfield U.
She is a real woman.
Sexy, mature, and an ass so fine I would give up my billions just for a taste.

But I know a taste won’t be enough and one night too short for all the dirty things I want to do to her and that deliciously curvy body.

She’ll be mine, but not just for tonight. Forever.

This is a full-length, standalone, steamy 18+ romance. No cheating or cliffhangers, and definitely a wonderful Happily Ever After guaranteed.

Finally, he could feel what I felt. All the abuse, all the suffocating agony from living under his oppressive rule. Finally, I could give it all back to him.

Let me give you a piece of advice: it’s unhealthy to repress that much shit. So don’t.

Unless one day, you might end up beating your douchebag husband half to death.

After a good solid minute of getting his ass beat, he finally snatches an opportunity to

escape. As I take a breather, he scrambles towards the front door, running out onto the

lawn.

But he doesn’t get far.

He’s not getting away. Not today.

Cause right now, there’s a fucking animal inside me.

I chase him down and knocking him to the grass, continuing my assault with the bat.

I can’t seem to stop myself. Not that I want to.

One part of me is filled with wrathful vengeance and the other looks on a spectator, as if I’m watching a horror movie. I really like horror movies.

Suddenly, big fat hairy arms wrap around my waist, pulling me away from Donald.

Donald my husband: The liar. The cheater. The piece of shit.

God, I fucking hate him.

Wrapped up in those thick arms, I struggle helplessly, flailing like a bug on it’s back. The man who’s gathered me up in a massive bearhug is Robert Carter, our nextdoor neighbor, with his wife Patty kneeling next to the crying Donald.

Crying. Literally. Big crocodile tears.

What a disgusting faker, trying to squeeze sympathy out of our neighbors.

I didn’t hit him all that hard. I think.

“Get her out of here! Now!” Gramps commanded. They didn’t hesitate and pulled my arms the opposite direction and my feet followed as I ran with them. I looked back just as we were about to turn the corner and saw Borin stand tall and push Larry back with his heavy arms. Gramps fell to the ground.
A wave flooded through me. A wave of intense violence.
“NO!” I screamed and quickly turned back, seizing my arms away from their grasps, heading back to help Gramps. I could hear Reed and Kent’s footsteps run back after me. But I didn’t care. I was not about to leave him. He was rubbing his head as Borin stood over him, about to place a hand on him.
“Don’t you touch him!” The voice that came out of my mouth was unrecognizable. I ran to him, holding out my arms to shove him away.
My body felt unfamiliar. My feet lightweight. My arms tingled as I felt a sensation rise to my shoulders, down my forearms, and out my fingertips.
Before I could even touch Borin, he flew away from Gramps’ side and slammed into a garbage receptacle a few feet away, causing a dent with his body.

I am a Leo. Born August 10, living on the east coast. I self-published my first novel, PNEUMA, November 2014, and it’s hasn’t stopped since.
One of my biggest problems was having too much to read. Now my newfound problem; having too much to write and not enough hands to type it out. Not enough brains to put the stories together fast enough. Not enough tea or coffee to keep me awake 24/7.

So, like every normal person, I have to take it one day at a time.

My cravings for sweets keep me going, any sort of cakes (especially red velvet), pies, cookies, and ice cream.
I have a cat named Bongo-Bongo, who loves to get in my way when I’m trying to work, but is too cute for me to fight him off.
And then I have my family, specifically my husband, who puts up with my endless nights, my tapping of the keyboard, my ridiculous imagination, and yet, he always encourages me to believe in myself and follow my dreams.

“Rosemary A Johns is one of fantasy’s greats. She’ll put you in mind of Anne Rice and leave you wanting more”–  Gothic Mom’s Reviews

“Take what you know about vampire romance and throw it away. Rosemary A Johns is not only a refreshing new voice in this genre, she excels it. Her vampires are edgy, titillating and enticing” – Rockchick Addiction Reviews

Don’t forget me…Sun entwined around me like a steel snake; her bite into my jugular was explosive rainbow end of days. I panted, squirming and gasping. Trapped in her embrace, my peepers rolled back, as I juddered. Then Sun was snogging me and I could taste my copper blood… Don’t forsake me…

I could feel the vibrations of Hartford’s anguished plea in his soulful song through every fevered atom. We curled around each other on the black cushions, which were piled on the lounge floor. Donovan was sprawled on the sofa, smoking wacky backy, serenaded by Hartford’s new routine for the club. But it was meant for him because one thing I knew..?

Love.

…Live for me…

Hartford was singing to Donovan: the dead bloke he craved to resurrect.

I twisted Sun, splaying her over the cushions. She laughed in surprise. I’d forgotten how young she still was. ‘My turn.’

I bit but gently. The moment when my fangs slid through her ivory skin was divine. Her blood was like coming home. Her body was quivering… Don’t forget me… and we were snogging, both our bloods bonded as one… Don’t forsake me… our hearts beating united… Live for me…

Crash.

Splintered door. Black balaclavas. First and Blood Lifers. Shooters.

‘Bloody down.’ I threw myself over Sun, shielding her. I couldn’t hear anything over the rat-rat-rat of gunshots. The sofa’s foam sprayed like snow.

Screams.

Christ in heaven, Hartford.

I peered up.

Dark shapes, like black ghosts, were thronging through our flat. A dozen at least.

Hartford was huddled by the wall: he was riddled with bullets. His breathing was laboured; crimson was seeping down his white shirt.

Donovan had dived from the sofa and was stroking Hartford’s cheek, snarling at the bastard, who had his semiautomatic pressed to Hartford’s forehead.

Enough was bleeding enough.

I stood up, straightening my shoulders. As if with a collective mind, the black balaclava bastards turned their shooters to point at me. Apart from the one who had his trained on Hartford. ‘Reckon there’s been a bit of a mix up, gents. So why don’t you pack up and get your arses out of here. By the way, what type of Blood Lifer brings either a gun or a First Lifer to a barney?’

‘That’d be me.’

Bollocks.

NOTORIOUS NOBLEMAN SEEKS REVENGE
Name and title: Adam Penrose, Duke of Stratton. Affiliation: London’s elite Society of Decadent Dukes. Family history: Scandalous. Personality traits: Dark and brooding, with a thirst for revenge. Ideal romantic partner: A woman of means, with beauty and brains, willing to live with reckless abandon. Desire: Clara Cheswick, gorgeous daughter of his family’s sworn enemy.

FAINT OF HEART NEED NOT APPLY
Clara may be the woman Adam wants, but there’s one problem: she’s far more interested in publishing her women’s journal than getting married—especially to a man said to be dead-set on vengeance. Though, with her nose for a story, Clara wonders if his desire for justice is sincere—along with his incredibly unnerving intention to be her husband. If her weak-kneed response to his kiss is any indication, falling for Adam clearly comes with a cost. But who knew courting danger could be such exhilarating fun?

The Duke of Stratton was becoming a serious inconvenience. Part of the joy of being an older woman known to be uninterested in marriage was that people tended not to notice what she did. Clara had enjoyed that freedom even before her father’s death and now did so even more because she occupied Gifford House alone.

Stratton’s curiosity about her complicated that. Now here she was, sitting in his carriage when she should have been visiting the decorator she had hired to make some changes at her house on Bedford Square. Since no one knew about the house, she could hardly have the duke trailing her there.

She did not care for how he maneuvered her into spending this time with him. She resented that he had won a little contest.

“Do you prefer town? You spend a good deal of time here,” he said once they were seated across from each other and the coachman had opened the carriage to the air.

From anyone else she would think it small talk. From this man, she heard an intrusive question. “I like both town and the country. I spend time in both places. However, after all the months at Hickory Grange after my father’s funeral, it was time to see some friends here and dip one foot into society again.” Even as she said it, she worried that she gave him too much information.

“Your bluestocking friends?”

“Yes.”

“What do you do when you are not talking letters with them?”

“If I told you, I would no longer be intriguing and mysterious.”

It was a mistake to say that. She knew it as soon she said it. His dark eyes settled on her, amused and too confident that he saw more than she wanted. That gaze unsettled her. She found it stark, almost naked, in its demand for her attention. It implied intimacies of the spirit that she did not want to have or acknowledge.

She hurried to brush her own provocation aside. “You will find my interests very boring and feminine. I visit drapers and feast my eyes on the fabrics I cannot wear now. I stroll through warehouses and covet silk cords and laces.”

“Why not buy them now and store them until you can use them?”

“Because the anticipation is part of the fun. There is the danger it will build to a fever, however, and when I finally remove these black ensembles, I will be so reckless in my spending on a new wardrobe that Theo will have to bail me out of debt.”

“Oh, I doubt that.”

She knew then that this man had learned about the size of her inheritance. Had Theo told him? Perhaps he had only heard gossip, but that would be enough.

It entered her mind that his only reason to pursue her with that stupid proposal was her fortune. As if the Duke of Stratton needed that! Although, really, who knew if he did or did not? She had not investigated him the way he had obviously investigated her, although she intended to.

Still, a man after her fortune. How predictable. How commonplace. How disappointing.

Once they were in the park she asked her own questions, while she encouraged their stroll to leave the main path so they might not be seen together.

“Would you truly not mind if the woman you proposed to had a lover before you? You keep implying as much.” She thought it a sophisticated and arch query and waited for him to avoid the meal once she set it squarely on a plate in front of him.

“You are what, twenty-four years in age? Only a fool would require innocence of a woman of that maturity.”

“What a liberal outlook you have.”

“I like to think so. I am only being a bit strict with you because I cannot risk my heir being the son of another man. I am sure you understand.”

She looked over at him, hoping to see that little smile or anything that indicated his continued references to his proposal were now a private joke. Regrettably, he appeared most serious. She decided that objecting would only dignify the ridiculous notion, so she ignored it.

Since he had coerced her into spending this time with him, he could not object to some frank questions about his life and his family, especially if he really believed they would marry. Althea was charged with investigating this man, but every bit added to the pile would help.

“Why did you leave?” she asked while they strolled through a little copse of budding trees.

“It was time to come back.”

“I did not mean why did you leave France. Why did you leave England?”

His mood altered in a snap, as if the question opened a door to the dark humor she sensed in him. “My mother did not want to remain here after my father’s death, so I took her away and ensured she was settled in Paris.”

“She wanted to go home, you mean. That is understandable.”

“She had lived here for decades. This should have been her home, not a foreign land to escape. There were those who never welcomed her, however, or allowed her to make

her place here.”

“If she is happy in France now, that is what matters, isn’t it?”

“I did not say she was happy. She did not want to return to France. She just did not want to remain here.”

His sharp tone made her stop walking. “I am sorry if I misunderstood. I was careless in my response. Of course she could not be happy to leave her home of so many years.” She swallowed the question that begged to be asked. Why did she not want to remain here?

They stood under one of the trees, in the tangle of linear shadows its branches made.

“Do you really know so little about my life?” he asked. “Did you never hear the talk about my mother? You were out before she left. Before my father died.”

She did not have to search her memory long to remember some of the talk she had heard. Her grandmother’s voice always dripped with disdain when she mentioned Stratton’s French duchess. Grandmother was one of the people who suspected the worst of everything and everyone French during the war.

Others had sniffed when the Duchess of Stratton walked by at a ball, however. Clara had always assumed they envied her beauty and sought bad gossip out of spite. In truth she had not much cared what people said, however. The old war between her family and Stratton’s had left her unsympathetic to whatever slights were visited on his mother.

“I will admit, now that you speak of it, that I do know something of what she endured,” she admitted. “If that drove her away, it was not fair.”

To her surprise he took her hand and raised it to a kiss. “That alone did not do it. However, it is good of you to see how unfair it was.”

That kiss on her hand, brief though it was, created a bridge of intimacy. She felt that kiss all the way up her arm and down her body. His gaze captured hers before he kissed her hand yet again, slowly.

She did not pull her hand away. She did not avert her eyes, as she most definitely should. Instead she stared while that kiss and those dark eyes enlivened her whole body.

He drew her closer, closer, until she either had to step toward him or fall. She did a bit of both, stumbling awkwardly, and found herself in his arms.

He was going to kiss her. She was sure of it. That must not happen. Instead of pushing away, however, she could not move. His gaze paralyzed her and incited an unseemly excitement.

His arms embraced her. He looked down. Dazed, she closed her eyes and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

When nothing happened, she opened her eyes. Instantly the euphoria lifted, and she felt a fool. She tried to extricate herself from his embrace, but he did not allow it.

“Do you want me to kiss you?” he asked.

“Of course not. You are the last man I want kissing me, I assure you.” She refused to look at him and continued trying to pull away.

“That is not true. Let us be honest with each other in this if nothing else.” His head dipped and his lips hovered over hers.

Her breath caught. Heavens, but he was beautiful. And exciting. Even that darkness seduced. Thrills kept spiraling through her, begging to have excuses to become something more powerful.

“Part of the fun is the anticipation,” he said quietly, imprisoning her with his gaze. “Although there is always the danger of it building to a fever.” His lips brushed hers, ever so faintly, but enough to create a starburst of sensation.

It was a terrible tease. A provocative promise.

About the Book

Winter 1888. At an asylum in the English countryside, a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper kills an orderly and flees into the rain-soaked night. His distraught keepers summon the Lady Vivienne Cumberland—who’s interviewed their patient and isn’t sure he’s a man at all. An enigmatic woman who guards her own secrets closely, Lady Vivienne knows a creature from the underworld when she sees one. And he’s the most dangerous she’s ever encountered.

As Jack rampages through London, Lady Vivienne begins to suspect what he’s searching for. And if he finds it, the doors to purgatory will be thrown wide open…

Across the Atlantic, an archaeologist is brutally murdered after a Christmas Eve gala at the American Museum of Natural History. Certain peculiar aspects of the crime attract the interest of the Society for Psychical Research and its newest investigator, Harrison Fearing Pell. Is Dr. Sabelline’s death related to his recent dig in Alexandria? Or is the motive something darker?

As Harry uncovers troubling connections to a serial murder case she’d believed was definitively solved, two mysteries converge amid the grit and glamor of Gilded Age New York. Harry and Lady Vivienne must join forces to stop an ancient evil. The key is something called the Thirteenth Gate. But where is it? And more importantly, who will find it first?

Excerpt

The Greymoor Lunatic Asylum made a grim impression even in daylight. It crouched at the end of a long, treeless drive, barred windows gleaming beneath a peaked slate roof. After her first interview with Dr. William Clarence, Lady Vivienne Cumberland had taken a hard look at those bars. She’d strongly suggested to the asylum superintendent that he move Dr. Clarence to a room with no window at all.

That had been just over a month ago. Now, in the darkest hour of the night, with rain coursing down the brick façade and thunder rattling the turrets, Greymoor looked like something torn from the pages of a penny dreadful, hulking and shadowed despite the lamps burning in every window. At the wrought-iron front gate, a black brougham drew to a halt. Following a brief exchange with the occupants, two officers from the Essex constabulary waved it through, immediately ducking back into the shelter of a police wagon.

“I told them to watch him,” Lady Cumberland muttered, yanking her gloves on. “To keep him isolated from the staff and other patients. Clearly, they didn’t listen. The fools.”

Alec Lawrence gripped the cane resting across his knees. He had been present at the interview, had looked into Dr. Clarence’s eyes, a blue so pale they reminded him of a Siberian dog. The memory unsettled him still, and he wasn’t a man who was easily shaken.

“We don’t know what happened yet,” he pointed out. “Superintendent Barrett can hardly be faulted considering we withheld certain information. I rather doubt he would have believed us anyway.”

Vivienne scowled. “You may be right, but it was only a matter of time. I’ve known that since the day Clarence was brought here. The S.P.R. made a very bad mistake entrusting him to Greymoor.”

“We still don’t know for sure—”

“Yes, we do. The killings stopped, didn’t they?”

“That could be for any number of reasons,” he said stubbornly.

“Including that the creature who committed them is behind bars. Or was, at least.”

Alec Lawrence buttoned his woolen greatcoat. This was not a new debate. “Perhaps. But there’s not a scrap of hard evidence against him. Nothing but a single reference in a report by some American girl and Clarence’s own odd demeanor. Had there been more, he would have been locked up tight in Newgate Prison.”

Vivienne turned her obsidian gaze on him. With her high cheekbones and full lips, she might have been thirty, or a decade in either direction. Only Alec and a handful of others knew better.

“That American girl is Arthur Conan Doyle’s goddaughter and she seemed quite clever to me. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway,” she added quietly. “Walls don’t hold Dr. Clarence’s sort for long.”

“Look,” he said, softening. “For what it’s worth, I think we did the right thing taking him off the streets. I just….” He trailed off, unsure how he meant to finish the thought.

“You don’t trust my judgment anymore. Since Harper Dods.”

“That’s not even remotely true. I simply think we need to keep open minds on the matter. The signs aren’t there, Vivienne. I’m the first to admit Dr. Clarence is an odd duck, perhaps worse. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t human.”

Vivienne arched a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. “And yet here we are, summoned by Sidgwick in the middle of the night. I wonder if he’s regretting his decision?”

The note from Henry Sidgwick, president of the Society for Psychical Research, had arrived in the form of a small, bedraggled messenger boy pounding on Lady Vivienne’s front door in St. James an hour before. It was both vague and ominous, citing an “unfortunate incident” involving Dr. Clarence and urging all due haste to the asylum.

“I suppose we’ll find out in a minute,” Alec said, turning his collar up. He swiped a hand through chestnut hair and jammed a top hat on his head. “Off to the races.”

A gust of rain shook the carriage as it slowed at the front entrance. A six-story tower capped by a Roman clock and white spire anchored two wings extending on either side. Unlike most asylums, which had separate annexes for men and women, Greymoor’s residents were all male. The north wing housed those poor souls suffering from garden-variety disorders like dementia and melancholia. The other was reserved for the so-called “incurables,” a euphemism for the criminally insane. Violent, unpredictable men deemed unfit for prison.

Despite his doubts, Alec Lawrence would have happily had the lot of them over for tea rather than spend five minutes in the company of Dr. William Clarence. In his heart, he wondered if Vivienne’s instincts were correct. But he wanted her to be wrong because the alternative was far worse.

“Yes.  The Solstice.  You know, where we all get naked and dance under the moonlight to become one with nature.  Until the sun comes up and we begin to sparkle.  Obviously, sparkling is really dangerous.”  – Rowyn Black

About the Book

“On our sixteenth birthdays, our kind is gifted with awesome powers. Except no, not really because this isn’t Narnia, or Hogwarts, or whatever other mythical realm where witches supposedly live. This is Elizabethtown, Illinois, and much to the chagrin of the local chapter of Susie-Homemakers, we live here.”

All witches understand that the universe is a scary sort of powerful on a good day. On a bad day? Well, that’s when The Tower card shows its face during a reading. As summer draws to a close before the beginning of junior year, Rowyn Black is tired of seeing that card stare up at her from the table. Rowyn, Reed, and Rosalyn have made it through just about every dramatic storm their sarcasm could weather during their seventeen year friendship, and it would be nice to have a quiet semester. Rowyn hopes that the only thing The Tower foretells is the frightening sight of the school parking lot come the first day- full of more jacked-up trucks and cut off shorts than a Luke Bryan video. True to its nature, however, the universe doesn’t care much for hopes and wishes, and when the promise of The Tower comes crashing down, they might fall right along with it.

About the Narrator

From an early age Audie, Earphones, and SOVAS Voice Arts Award-winning audiobook narrator R.C. Bray despised reading. Truly hated it with a passion.

And audiobooks? Even worse. Those were for people too lazy to read (not to be confused with those like himself who didn’t want to read to begin with).

R.C. eventually got older and wiser (he was always good-looking) and eschewing his capricious convictions fell head-over-heels with reading. Not just to learn words like “eschew” and “capricious” so he could use them in a bio line, but because someone was actually going to give him money to do it.

Note: R.C.’s gorgeous wife and three beautiful children begged him not to make this his official bio. Clearly he misunderstood

It took two years to finally get over Dakota and move on with his life, or so Caden believed, until he has to face the thought of a world without her. Dakota Martineau appeared to have the world in the palm of her hand. She is beautiful, kind, has an adoring family, including her best friend and identical twin sister. She has a passion for incorporating her love of life, family, and her cultural background into her dream job with special needs kids. Then, in a life-altering crash, she discovers just how fragile life is. Thankful to be surrounded by an incredible group of friends who will help heal, not just her body, but also her soul, she knows she should be happy she is alive and on the mend, but Dakota is still tormented by the loss of her one true love.

How can you feel safe with the one person who hurt you the most? What road will Caden and Dakota take when they discover fate wreaked havoc on everything they thought was true?

Excerpt

“Hello?”

When no one answered, he pulled the phone back to make sure the connection hadn’t failed.

“Hello?” he asked again.

Dakota regretted calling the second she heard his voice. It was the middle of the night, and he was in bed with his girlfriend. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. She had to say something, though, since she had woken up the poor guy. It was now or never.

Ever so softly, Caden heard, “C-Caden?” It took him a minute to register that it was Dakota.

His stomach dropped. Something was wrong.

“Dakota? Sweetheart, are you okay?” He patiently waited for her to say something as he walked through the living room to the sliding doors and out to the balcony. It was freezing outside, but he didn’t want to risk waking Sasha up by grabbing a sweatshirt.

Struggling, she stuttered, “Yes, I’m s-sorry. I sh-shouldn’t have c-called. I d-didn’t mean to w-wake you.”

Feeling panicked that she would end the call, he said, “Dakota, please don’t hang up. Talk to me. I’m here. I’m listening. You must have called for a reason.”

As he ran his free hand over his face, Caden heard her hiccup. She was crying.

Dakota was breaking his heart, but he had promised himself and Sasha that he would try to work things out between them. What the hell was he doing?

But this was Dakota, and she sounded so lost and scared. It had to be important if she was calling him, especially at two a.m.

“Sweetheart, take your time and tell me why you called.”

Dakota couldn’t tell him why she really called. She couldn’t admit it was because she was still in love with him and wanted him to chase away all her fears.

“I-I n-needed to hear y-your voice and t-tell you th-thank you for s-saving my life.” She hiccupped again, trying to cover her quiet sobs.

“His heart plummeted even further. “Aw, Dakota you never have to thank me. I’m just so thankful fate intervened and I was travelling down that road at the exact time you needed me. How are you doing? Your voice sounds amazing. Francesca told me you were making great progress. I’m very impressed. How are you feeling?”

She was filled with delight knowing he was sincerely impressed with her progress. She wanted to fill him in on everything she had accomplished and how hard she had worked.”

“I am up and w-walking again. W-well, not what everyone w-would consider w-walking, but I’m up.”

He could picture her face tight with concentration as she took those first steps and the smile that must have followed.

“C-Caden …?”

“Yeah, I’m still here. I was just envisioning you up and about. Take your time; tell me what other strides you’ve made.”

“N-nothing. Just … th-thank you and t-take c-care.” It would be so easy to talk to him for hours, but this had been a mistake. She shouldn’t have called. It hurt too much to love someone you couldn’t have. For her own sanity, she had to end this now.

“Dakota? Dakota, are you there?” Caden pulled the phone away and looked at it. She had hung up.

Dream Cast

I have to admit right now that I am not a TV watcher or movie goer. About fourteen years ago I went back to school at night to upgrade while I worked full time and was raising my family. For two years, my life was bedlam. All the shows I watched religiously moved on without me. I swore when I finished school I was reading for enjoyment. I picked up a book after graduation and now read about three a week. I never went back to TV or movies. So, forgive me for my lack of knowing the best choices.

Before I even started this book, I knew exactly who I wanted Dakota to look like. I was cleaning my house and someone left the TV. A new show started it was Say Yes to the Dress. One of the consultants of the show Katie Allen from Kleinfled was picking a wedding dress for her own wedding and the woman captivated me. She was so beautiful and not that fake beauty. The way she smiled and carried herself lead me to believe that her beauty radiates from the inside out. She was definitely my character Dakota.

Katie is not an actress, so for my dream cast I had to search long and hard for actresses with the image of Dakota. I found her. To my absolute amazement, I found the actress Shannon Baker who had a twin sister Shauna Baker. My main character has an identical twin sister in the book. How weird is it that the actress I choose also had an identical twin?

For my lead male character Caden, I wrote the description I had in my head and then typed all the information into goggle. I found the perfect man and I screenshot his image. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize I would need that information to create a dream cast. After four hours today searching the web with the same keywords, I have been unsuccessful in finding my Caden so I settled for Theo James. But not so much for his looks more for the way he carries himself.

Edward changes with every book I write. He appears in each book in the series and shows a different side of his personality with each of the girls. I find in one book he looks like one person to me and in the next it totally changes. I think because I know him so well, I think I am taking the impression of the lead male characters’ perception of Edward. Wow I talk about them like they are real. Well in my head they are! LOL

Here is my dream cast:

Dakota Martineau – Shannon Baker

Koko Martineau – Shauna Baker

Caden Ross – Theo James

Edward – Jonny Weston

Halona Martineau – Patricia Velásquez

André Martineau – Jean Dujardin
